What is a CT scan?

The full form of CT Scan is a Computed Tomography Scan. The other name of the CT scan is CAT (Computed Axial Tomography). CT scan helps to visualize our internal organs with the help of X-ray beams. They provide a detailed image of our body parts compared to the normal X-ray scan. The CT scan can be done on any part of your body. The report of the CT scan can be used for different studies by your physician. Further diagnosis can be done with the help of a CT scan.

What are the different types of CT scans?

The CT scan can be either be a contrast-enhanced CT scan (CECT) or a non-contrast CT scan (NCCT) or a high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) scan. On the basis of your diagnosis, your doctor will suggest the CT scan you should take.

Non-contrast CT scan is a normal CT scan where no contrast dye is used to visualize the body parts. In the case of CECT, the contrast dye is injected into the body to get a detailed image of the body parts. The contrast dye blocks the X-ray beams and appears white in the scan.  The contrast CT scan is mostly done to visualize the blood vessels or intestines. Know more about the CECT scan.

HRCT scan is a type of CT scan with specific techniques to enhance image resolution. This type of CT scan is commonly used for lung disease. Know more about the HRCT scan.

Why is a CT scan recommended?

A CT scan is mostly recommended during emergencies to examine the damages because it is very quick compared to other imaging procedures such as an MRI scan. CT scan helps the doctor to

  • Detect and locate the tumor, infections, etc.
  • Examine the injuries in the internal organs
  • Examine bone damages
  • Detect any abnormality in the blood vessels
  • Plan guided biopsy
  • Monitor the effectiveness of an ongoing treatment

What are the common CT scan studies?

The CT scan can be done at any part of our body. However, the most common CT scan studies are

CT Angiography (CTA): It is done to visualize the arteries carrying blood from the heart.

CT scan head: It is done to examine head injuries, brain tumors, and other injuries in the head. Know more about CT scan head/brain.

CT scan spine: It is done to get a detailed image of the spinal column of our body.

CT scan chest: It is usually performed to detect acute and chronic changes in the lungs, such as fibrosis, emphysema, and tumors.

CT scan of the gastrointestinal tract: It is used to visualize the different types of tissues present in the liver, spleen, pancreas, and kidneys.

PET-CT scan: A PET-CT scan is a special study of a CT scan that combines a CT scan and a PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scan. It is generally recommended by your doctor to get detailed information about your cancer. Know more about PET-CT scan.

How is the CT scan performed?

The CT scanner looks like a long tube with a table attached to it. You will be asked to change to a gown provided in the lab before the procedure. You should lie down on the table which slides through the CT machine. You may be strapped to the table to hold you still. Then the X-ray tubes rotate around you to get an image of your body. Each rotation will yield several images of thin slices of your body. You may hear buzzing noises due to the rotation.

The entire procedure will be monitored by a radiologist from a different room.

Generally, the entire procedure of a CT scan lasts up to 20 minutes depending on the study and the body part that is examined.

How to prepare for a CT scan?

There is no special preparation required for a CT scan. You can have a normal diet and carry on your regular activities before the CT scan.

You are restricted to carry items with metallic contents inside the CT scan room.

In some cases, a contrast dye may be used to produce more enhanced images of the body part. Your doctor will ask you to fast for a certain period and may provide some special instructions if the contrast dye is used.

What are the risks associated with the CT scan?

CT scan involves limited or very few risks. The CT scan uses X-ray beams to produce a detailed image of your body. So you will be exposed to a limited amount of radiation which is generally harmless. But if the CT scan is done on a regular basis, there is a slight risk of developing cancer over time.

It is generally advised to avoid a CT scan if you are pregnant or expected to be pregnant as the radiation may sometimes harm the fetus.

If you are exposed to a high level of radiation then there are chances of skin damages. So it is advisable to consult with your doctor before undergoing a CT scan.

How long does it take to get the CT scan report?

The images captured will be stored in an electronic form. The radiologist will interpret the information and sends a report to your doctor. Your doctor will explain the report obtained from the CT scan.

Generally, the CT scan reports will be available within 24 to 48 hrs of the procedure.
