What is CT Scan?

Full form of CT Scan or CAT Scan is Computed Tomography Scan. In a CT Scan, multiple beams of X-Rays are used to construct the 3D image of a part of the body. In a general X-Ray only one beam of X ray is used whereas in a CT Scan multiple beams are used. The information about the body part captured by these beams is sent to a computer which combined these to generate a 3D scan. Unlike a traditional X ray, a CT scan gives much clearer images and is able to distinguish between tissues inside the organs.

CT Scan is a non invasive and painless procedure. The scan may take anywhere from 5 minutes to 30 minutes. Patients can carry on with the normal routine after the scan.

When is CT Scan prescribed?

CT Scan can be conducted on many body parts including chest, head, kidneys, bones, joints, spinal cord, liver and many more. CT Scan is used in the diagnosis of sinus, kidney stones, appendicitis, gall stones and spread of cancers. It can be used to find defects in bones, fractures, infections and injuries. As an example, a CT Scan of chest will inspect lungs, heart, easophagus, or major arteries. This scan may detect lung cancer, pulmonary embolism or aneurysm. For more information on uses of CT Scans, check here.

How is the CT Scan done?

CT Scan is large round machine with a hole in the middle. A table is attached to the CT Scan machine on which the patient lies down. Slowly, the table moves inside the machine and the machine will start sending X-Rays to the studied body part. The image of a CT Scan machine is given below.

Sometimes, your doctor may recommend a CT Scan with contrast. In this kind of scan, a dye is injected inside your body before the scan. The dye is visible to the X-Rays in the machines and can help in giving clearer image of the part studied.

Is the radiation from CT Scan harmful?

Generally any exposure to radiation is harmful for our body to a certain extent. The radiation exposure during a CT Scan said to be low and the probability of anyone developing cancer due to this radiation is fairly small. In most cases, if you compare the benefit of diagnosis of a disease through CT Scan vs. the negative impact of radiation, one would go ahead with the CT Scan. You should check with your doctor if you really need to get a CT Scan or any other test will do.

However, CT Scans are not recommended for pregnant women because the x rays may harm the unborn baby. For breastfeeding women, if they have a CT Scan with contrast where an iodinated dye is used, the breastfeeding should be avoided for next 24 hours after the scan. One should consult the doctor on the exact duration. More about this here.

What is the preparation for CT Scan?

There is no special preparation required. It is generally a good idea to ask the prescribing doctor and the laboratory for any prerequisites or requirements from their side. The following should be kept in mind

  • Wear loose clothes for the scan
  • A few hours of fasting may be required for your test – check with the lab beforehand
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, do let the doctor and the lab know beforehand. Pregnant women are generally asked not to get a CT Scan done.
  • If you are afraid of closed spaces, let the lab know. You may be required to take a pill before the test to calm your nerves.
  • For a CT Scan with Contrast, you may need to take an oral agent before the scan and may have to wait for 30 minutes or so for the agent to be absorbed in the body before the scan.
  • Certain contrast agents may cause nausea or vomiting post the scan. If you are going for a CT Scan with contrast, check with the lab regarding any post scan precautions.

What are different kinds of CT Scans?

CT Scans can be conducted for various organs including heart, liver, kidney and many more. When a CT Scan KUB is prescribed, it covers kidneys, ureter and bladder. When CT Scan PNS is prescribed, it covers paranasal sinuses. CT Scan of Head covers brain and CT Scan of Chest covers lungs. CT Scan of upper and lower abdomen covers the organs, bones and vessels in those areas and sometimes, the prescribing doctor also mentions the organ of focus. CT Scan Angiography is a great new alternative to traditional angiography. It is much faster and can even be done as a preventive scan for blood vessel blockage check. No hospitalisation is required.

CT Scan can be done with or without contrast. In CT Scan with contrast, a contrasting agent needs to be drunk or is injected in the body. This contrasting agent helps highlight certain parts during the CT Scan. The prescribing doctor is in a position to specify if a contrast is needed or not.

What are CT Scan machine specifications?

CT Scan machines are characterised by the number of slices they generate. Typical machine specifications include 32 slice, 64 slice, 128 slice and 32o slice. A CT Scan takes a lot of two dimensional images (slices) and combines them to made a 3D image. Generally, higher slice machines give more details for the doctor and are faster. However, in many cases smaller slice machines serve the purpose. Higher slice CT Scan machines are generally more useful for heart studies as heart keeps on moving during the study.

If you doctor wants a specific CT Scan machines specification, she will mention that to you. For more information of CT Scan slice definition, you may check here.
