What is the procedure of PET CT Brain?

PET Scan machine is a round large machine which looks like a doughnut. There is a table attached to the machine on which the patient lies down. The table will move inside the machine for the test to be done.

  1. You may be required to fast for 8 to 10 hours before the test. You may take water though.
  2. If you are under any medication, let the doctor and the lab know.
  3. If you are pregnant, do inform your doctor. The radiation from PET Scan machine may be harmful for the fetus. Hence, pregnant women are generally not asked to get a PET Scan done.
  4. You should leave your jewellery or any other metal object at home.
  5. You may be required to change into the lab gown for this procedure.

When you reach the lab, the lab will inject or ask you to drink the radioactive substance. It usually takes an hour for this substance to be absorbed by our body. The PET Scan Brain is conducted after that. The test itself may take around 30 minutes.
