Frequently asked questions about the CA 19-9 Test

The following are the most important questions about the cancer market test that everyone should know before taking the test.

  • What is the CA 19-9 test?
  • How is the procedure done?
  • What is the normal range?
  • What are the risk factors?

What is the CA 19-9 Test?

A CA 19-9 Test, also known as Pancreatic Cancer Marker Test, is a blood test done to detect Pancreatic Cancer in the body. CA 19-9 is a cancer marker test.

Cancer markers are substances produced within our body in response to cancer or by the cancer cells themselves. Hence, cancer markers are used in the identification or ongoing assessment of cancer.

As the name suggests, CA 19-9 (Pancreatic Cancer Marker) is primarily a marker for pancreatic cancer. CA in the test stands for Cancer Antigen.

How is the procedure done?

A technician will draw the blood sample from your vein for the testing. Normally, the process takes less than 5 minutes.

Then the blood sample is forwarded to the labs and the tumor marker is analyzed by special machines. The report is generally available within 24 hours after the test. The levels may or may not increase when the cancer cells are present in your blood as it is normal to get a decreased and detectable level of tumor marker.

Your concerned doctor is in the right position to interpret your results. Usually, the test is ordered after a thorough physical checkup and few other lab tests or even scans.

What is the normal range?

People suffering from pancreatic cancer may have a high level of CA 19-9 marker. It is estimated that high levels will be seen in approximately 80% of people with pancreatic cancer. However, the reverse of this is not true. If you have a high level of CA 19-9, it may not indicate that you have pancreatic cancer. High levels of CA 19-9 marker may be seen even in some healthy individuals.

High levels of CA 19-9 marker may also be seen in patients with hepatobiliary cancer, gastric cancer, and hepatocellular cancer. A small percentage of patients suffering from colorectal cancer or breast cancer may also demonstrate higher levels of CA 19-9 marker in their bodies.

Please note that your doctor is in the best position to recommend this test for you. CA 19-9 Test can NOT be used as a pancreatic cancer screening test standalone without the examination by a qualified doctor. It is generally one of the many tests that the doctor will use to monitor the progression of pancreatic cancer or other gastrointestinal cancer or measure the effectiveness of the therapy.

What are the risk factors?

The symptoms of pancreatic cancer are quite subtle in the initial stage. In the later stages, the symptoms could include frequent jaundice, blood clots, abdominal and back pain, sudden weight or appetite loss, and a few more.
