Frequently Asked Questions About Ceruloplasmin Test

What is Ceruloplasmin Test?

A ceruloplasmin test is done to measure the level of ceruloplasmin in the blood. It is primarily done to diagnose Wilson’s disease. Ceruloplasmin is a type of glycoprotein which is produced by the liver. This enzyme carries more than 95 percent of copper in the blood. Ceruloplasmin is responsible to regulate the iron metabolism in your body by carrying the copper throughout the body.

Copper is an essential mineral that plays a vital role in assisting the various processes in our body such as forming connective tissues, producing energy at cellular levels, and functioning the nervous system.

Ceruloplasmin test helps to diagnose Wilson’s disease which is a genetic disorder. Wilson disease stores excess copper in different organs in our body. This disorder is also called as hepatolenticular degeneration.

If the ceruloplasmin level is low in the blood, it indicates that you may have Wilson disease where the copper is stored in different body organs. It is also done to diagnose various copper-related abnormalities such as copper deficiencies, Menkes kinky hair syndrome, etc.

Why is Ceruloplasmin Test Done?

Your doctor will ask you to take the ceruloplasmin test if you show any symptoms of having Wilson disease such as

  • Nausea
  • Pain in Joint
  • Fatigue
  • Anemia
  • Loss in appetite
  • Pain in the abdomen
  • Tremors
  • Jaundice
  • Dystonia
  • Behavior change
  • Uncontrolled movement or walking

It is also done to determine the effectiveness of ongoing treatment for Wilson’s disease.

Is there any Preparation Required for the test?

Ceruloplasmin test is a simple blood test. There are no special preparations required for the test. You can have your normal diet and carry on with regular activities.

If you are undergoing estrogen therapy or taking birth control pills, consult with your doctor as these may affect the test results. It is recommended to wear half-sleeved cloth to the test for convenience.

What is the Procedure of the test?

The procedure of the ceruloplasmin test is similar to that of any other blood test. A nurse will put an elastic band around your arm to make the veins more visible. The area from where the blood is to be drawn will be cleaned with a disinfectant liquid.

A needle will be injected into the arm to draw the blood sample which will be collected in a testing tube. After removing the needle, the puncture site will be pressed with a cotton ball to stop the bleeding. The collected blood samples will be then sent to the laboratory for further testing.

What do the Ceruloplasmin Test Results Mean?

The normal range of ceruloplasmin in the blood is 20 mg/dl to 50 mg/dl. The low level of ceruloplasmin in the blood indicates that you may have Wilson disease. The ceruloplasmin level can also be low due to various other factors such as liver disease or failure, cirrhosis, malnutrition, Menkes syndrome, nephrotic syndrome, etc.

If the level of ceruloplasmin is high, it means that you may have an infection, rheumatoid arthritis, lymphoma, etc.

Your doctor may ask you to take other tests along with the ceruloplasmin test to detect the cause of copper-related abnormalities.
