Frequently Asked Questions About D Dimer Test

What is a D Dimer Test?

The D Dimer Quantitative Test is a tool for your doctor to detect any serious blood clots. The blood clot is a part of the healing process to stop excessive bleeding whenever there is an injury. It is a semi-solid state of blood formed by the platelets and fibrin in our body.

A blood clot is not required once the bleeding stops. So the body breaks the blood clot limiting it to some substance floating in the blood at the end of the process. The substances floating around the blood are called D Dimer which is a part of the protein.

The D Dimer protein should go away over a period of time. But the D Dimer level may increase in our blood making the clot deep into the veins. This may lead to serious problems in the legs.

This test is done to measure the level of D Dimer in your body to detect any kind of blood clot.

When is it done?

The D Dimer blood test is usually done to look for the conditions causing abnormal blood clots. Your doctor may ask you to take the test if you have the symptoms of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), Pulmonary Embolism, or Stroke.

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Symptoms

  • Pain in leg or tenderness (normally in one leg)
  • Swelling in leg
  • Redness in leg

Pulmonary Embolism Symptoms

  • Shortness of breath
  • Pain in chest
  • Coughing
  • Fasting heartbeat

Stroke

  • Dizziness
  • Numbness in face
  • Confusion

D Dimer test is also done if you have the symptoms of Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC). This is a condition where blood clots form in the small blood vessels all over your body.

Your doctor may ask you to take the test if you have the symptoms of DIC such as bleeding gums, vomiting, nausea, seizures, peeing more often, severe pain in the muscle, and abdomen. It is also ordered at regular intervals to monitor the treatment of the DIC.

How to prepare for the D Dimer test?

The D Dimer test is a simple blood test. It does not require any special preparation prior to the test. You can have a normal diet and carry on with your regular activities.

How is the D Dimer Test Done?

The procedure for D Dimer is almost similar or the same as other blood tests. A nurse will put a tight elastic band around your arm to make your vein visible to draw the blood. The needle size will be sanitized with a disinfectant liquid before injecting the needle.

A nurse will slowly inject the needle into your vein to draw the blood sample for the test. After getting enough blood samples, the needle will be removed and a cotton ball will be used to put pressure on that area. Then a band-aid will be put on the needle site to stop the bleeding.

Is there any risk involved?

There is no possible risks involved in the D Dimer test. You may feel slight discomfort when the blood is drawn. It is necessary to inform your doctor if you have any kind of bleeding disorders which may lead to excessive bleeding at the needle site. Other than this, the D Dimer test has no possible side effects.

What do the D Dimer Test Results mean?

If the results of the D Dimer blood test are ‘high’, it means that you have a significant blood clot in your body. But the test does not say where exactly the blood clot is or the causes of this.

The D Dimer level may go up due to some other medical conditions other than the blood clot. The D Dimer level may be high due to

  • Liver disease
  • Infection
  • Injury
  • Cancer

So the D Dimer test alone is not enough for the diagnosis. Your doctor may ask you to take several other tests such as imaging scans or blood tests if the results are high.
