Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease that is caused by the infection of a bacteria named Neisseria Gonorrhoeae. What is Gonorrhea Test (DNA PCR)?

Gonorrhea Test (DNA PCR) is recommended after a thorough physical examination by your physician.  It is a simple blood-based test that is done to diagnose and confirm the presence of bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae in the infected patients.

Gonorrhea Test is done through the PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) method, that is suggested as the best procedure to conduct a DNA Test (Deoxyribonucleic acid). The procedure helps to derive the value of the amount of infecting bacteria present in the blood. The technicians take a specific series of DNA from your blood sample and test it.

The procedure to collect the blood sample should not take more than 5-10 minutes. But your reports may take 3-4 days to arrive.

What are the common risk factors for Gonorrhea?

There are certain factors that increase the risk of getting infected:

  • Teenager or below 25
  • Multiple sex partners
  • A newly developed physical relationship with a partner, who might have multiple partners in past
  • A history of Gonorrhea disease
  • Suffering from other Sexually Transmitted Diseases such as ‎Chlamydia.

What can be the possible complications of Gonorrhea?

Gonorrhea is treatable but if left untreated it can lead to significant complications, such as:

  • Infertility in women
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
  • Ectopic pregnancies (when the embryo attaches outside of the uterus)
  • Infertility in men (Epididymitis-an abnormal curving at the back of the testicles)
  • Infection and pain in the joints and other body parts
  • Swelling and stiffness in multiple body parts.
  • Increased risk of HIV/AIDS
  • Inborn complications in babies (blindness, conjunctivitis, sores on the scalp and infections)
  • Damage to the urethra and testicles
  • Even after the completion of the treatment, your body may show a few of the symptoms

How to prevent Gonorrhea infections?

  • Avoid unprotected sex
  • Ask your new partner to get tested for STD before sharing any physical intimacy with them.
  • Ask your partner to seek medical attention if you notice any signs of a possible infection.
  • If you are already infected then abstain from sex
  • Do not engage with multiple partners
  • If you are on your treatment (antibiotics), it’s important to take the full course of pills to ensure that your infection is completely treated.
  • Go for regular STD Testing or Gonorrhea Screening.

What Does the Gonorrhea Test Results Mean?

You may receive your reports within 3-4 days after your blood test.

The reference ranges are generally specified on the right side of your reports. You can compare the reference range and your value for the bacterial infection.

If your reports show positive results then it may indicate an active gonorrhea infection that must be treated urgently. Your doctor will place you on an antibiotic course of treatment.

If your reports show negative results then it may indicate no evidence of infection during the test.

Do not worry if you are in your menstruation cycle during the test as it will not affect the results.

Your doctor is in the right position to interpret your results. Consult them before coming to a conclusion.

If a pregnant woman is infected with gonorrhea, there is a higher risk that the baby can be infected during delivery. Your healthcare provider may give you an eye ointment for your baby.
