Frequently Asked Questions About HIDA Test

What is the HIDA scan?

Hepatobiliary Iminodiacetic Acid scan is the full form of the HIDA scan. This procedure is also known as Cholescintigraphy / Hepatobiliary scintigraphy / Hepatobiliary scan.

HIDA scan is an imaging procedure done to evaluate the conditions of your liver, gall bladder, and bile ducts. Bile is nothing but the fluid stored in the liver which helps the liver to break down the fats for digestion.

HIDA scan may also be taken as a part of the gall bladder ejection fraction test, a test that measures the rate of bile excretion in your gall bladder. It is also often used with X-ray and ultrasound tests.

Why is the HIDA scan done?

HIDA scan is a diagnostic screening test used to figure out various diseases related to your gall bladder and liver. They may include

  • Inflammation of the gall bladder (Cholecystitis)
  • Stones in the gall bladder
  • Blockages or leakages in the bile ducts
  • Biliary atresia, congenital bile duct abnormalities- a rare condition affecting infants
  • Evaluation of liver transplant
HIDA Scan diagnoses the condition of gall bladder, bile ducts and liver.
HIDA Scan diagnoses the condition of the gall bladder, bile ducts, and liver.

Who should take the HIDA scan?

Your doctor may recommend you take a HIDA scan if you face the following problems which may be related to the functioning of your gall bladder.

  • Nausea
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • High fever
  • Feeling very chill
  • Indigestion
  • Frequent gas problems

How should I prepare for the HIDA scan?

HIDA scan requires some preparation. You should fast for at least four hours before the scan and drink only clear liquids. Do inform your doctor about the medications and supplements you take. It is very important to consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. You should remove all the jewelry and metallic items and can wear any dress because you will be asked to wear a hospital gown during the scan.

What is the procedure of the HIDA scan?

Before the scan:

The imaging technician will ask you to lie back on the table and remain still. He then injects the radioactive tracer through an IV (intravenous needle) into your vein in the arm. A gamma camera is placed over your belly to capture the images.

During the scan:

Sometimes the technician injects a drug called sincalide in the IV to make your gall bladder contract and empty or other drug called morphine which makes the gall bladder view clear. The radioactive tracer starts moving through your bloodstream into the liver where the cells producing bile absorb it.

Then the tracer moves along with the bile into the gall bladder and the small intestine. The technician controls and moves the gamma camera to capture the images as the tracer moves through your body. The radiologist sees the images on the screen.

After the scan:

The radiologist analyses the images prepares the report and sends it to your doctor. You should drink plenty of water to excrete radioactive tracer. The radioactive tracer usually goes away from your body in the urine within 1 or 2 days.

It usually takes a minimum of one to three hours to perform a HIDA scan.

Is there any risk associated with this scan?

Though there is small radiation exposure, the HIDA scan involves no risk or any major complications. Some people may get an allergic reaction to the radioactive tracer and may feel irritated in the injection site.

Who interprets the scan results?

The scan results are mostly available on the same day. Your doctor receives the report from the lab, interprets the result, and discusses it with you. The scan result shows the health condition of your gall bladder and liver. If the results are abnormal, he may prescribe some additional tests for the correct diagnosis or prescribe you some medicines to get rid of it.
