Frequently Asked Questions About HPV Test

What is a HPV?

The Human Papilomavirus is the full form of HPV. The HPV is a group of around 150 related viruses which causes cancer in cervical, vagina, anus or in mouth/throat. Each HPV virus is given a specific number to differentiate the virus causing cancer which is called HPV types.

How is it transmitted?

The HPV can live only in specific cells that are found on the surface of skin and moist surface. It is transmitted mainly by the intimate skin to skin contact.

You may get infection by having vaginal, anal or oral sex with a infected person. The infected person can transmit the disease even before the symptoms starts showing. The symptoms may develop years after getting infected by the virus.

In most case, the HPV virus gets cured on its own and does not cause any health problem. If the HPV virus stays for a long time, it may lead to health issues like genital warts and cancer.

Why is HPV DNA test done?

The HPV test is done to detect the presence of virus that causes cervical cancer. But the test does not tell you whether you have cancer or not. It helps you to examine the presence of HPV virus that puts you at high risk of cervical cancer. The HPV DNA test is normally done along with the PAP test which detects any abnormality in cervical cells.

It is not necessary for women under 30 years of age as it is not helpful. The HPV virus is transmitted mainly through sexual contact which is common in young women. So the test result will be positive most of the times. It takes more than 10 years for a cervical cancer to develop. So it is advisable to watch the changes in cervical before undergoing treatment for normal HPV infections.

How to prepare for the HPV test?

The test does not require any special preparation. You should avoid intercourse or taking vaginal medicines two days before the test. It is advisable not to take the test during your menstrual cycle.

What is the procedure?

The test is done by inserting a speculum into your vagina. You have to undress up to your waist to carry on the test. You will lie down on your back with knees bent spreading your legs.

Your doctor will insert a speculum into your vagina. It is a device used to hold the wall of the vagina wide open to get a clear picture of cervix. Then your doctor uses a small brush to take cervical samples from your cervix.

How is the HPV DNA PCR done?

The HPV DNA test is a laboratory technique of molecular biology. The polymerace chain reaction is the full form of PCR.

In the test they make multiple duplicate copies of a DNA sequence, involving repeated reaction with polymerace. The PCR takes place approximately 25 to 50 times to detect HPV virus in the cervical cells. This method gives accurate results.

What are the side effects?

The HPV test does not cause any side effects. You may feel a sensation of pressure in pelvic area due to the speculum inserted. Apart from that there is no risk in the test.

When can you get the HPV DNA test result?

It will normally take two to three weeks to get the HPV DNA test result. On the basis of the test results, your doctor may ask you to take colonoscopy test for further diagnosis.
