Frequently Asked Questions About LDH Test

What is LDH Test or Lactate Dehydrogenase Test?

Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH Test) Serum Marker is a blood-based test that detects the existence and severity of tissue damage in organs such as the liver, heart, kidney, and lungs. It is useful for investigating a variety of diseases in the body. It is also used to monitor the changes in the nature of the tumor is present in the body.

LDH is an enzyme produced by cells in the presence of certain diseases or when cells get damaged or destroyed.

What is the normal range for the LDH Serum Marker Test?

Reference LDH level ranges from 140U/L (units per liter) to 280 U/L. Results may vary widely from lab to lab.

When illness or injury damages your cells, LDH is released into the bloodstream, causing an increase in the level of LDH in your blood. If your result shows high levels of LDH in the blood it signifies acute or chronic tissue damage. Additional tests are recommended to confirm its causes. Abnormal low LDH levels occur rarely and usually are not considered harmful.

What is the procedure?

A technician will draw a sample of blood from a vein at the inner elbow or the back of the hand. Your lab technician will sanitize the test area with an antiseptic cotton swab and wrap a band around the upper arm to make the vein swell. Then, a syringe will be inserted into your vein through which blood samples will be collected. Then the elastic band and the needle will be removed. The technician will stick a bandage on the puncture site.

Factors interfering with LDH levels

Certain medications and drugs may interfere with an accurate LDH test report. If the patient is consuming a large amount of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) then it may lower LDH levels. Alcohol, anesthetics, aspirin, narcotics, and procainamide may raise LDH levels. Strenuous exercise may also raise LDH levels. Ask your doctor about any medications you should avoid before the test.

One should generally not try to interpret the results of the LDH test in isolation. Your doctor, who understands your disease history and context, will look at LDH results along with other test results. Then she may be able to come to the right diagnosis.

What are the risk factors of increased levels?

The risk factor of increased LDH levels can include blood flow deficiency, strokes, certain cancers, heart attack, hemolytic anemia, liver disease, muscle injury, pancreatitis, tissue death, alcohol, and drug consumption.

What are the tests generally prescribed with LDH Test?

If your test results show elevated levels then more specific tests are ordered such as AST (SGOT), Alkaline Phosphatase ALP, ALT (SGPT) that may help diagnose the condition and determine the organs damaged. LDH Serum Marker Test may be ordered at regular intervals when an individual has been diagnosed with cancer.
