Frequently Asked Questions About MRI Scan
What is an MRI scan?
The full form of MRI is Magnetic Resonance Imaging. It is the most common imaging technique used to detect and diagnose various abnormalities in the inner parts of our body.
The MRI uses strong magnetic field and radio waves to visualize the internal organs of our body.
Why is an MRI done?
MRI is an effective tool to visualize the internal organs of our body. It can be done on almost every body part to diagnose various disorders like
- Brain injury
- Blood vessel blockage
- Spinal cord injuries
- Infection in bones
- Heart disease
- Liver disease
- Kidney disorders
- Damage in joints
It is also done to monitor the success of an ongoing treatment for certain medical disorders.
How should I prepare for MRI?
Normally, MRI does not require any preparations prior to the scan. You may be asked to change into a gown provided by the lab. As the MRI uses strong magnets, you are restricted to carry any objects containing metallic contents.
Sometimes a contrast material may be used to get detailed picture of the body part. It may be injected in your vein or given orally. The necessary instruction will be given by your doctor if the contrast dye is used.
How is the procedure performed?
MRI machine looks like a huge doughnut with large magnets around it. You will be asked to lie down on a table that slides into the MRI machine. The table may slide partly or wholly into the machine depending on the body part that is to be examined.
It uses strong magnetic field and radio waves to generate images of our inner parts. The MRI machine will create strong magnetic field inside our body. The signals provided by the magnetic field will be then picked by a special computer which will be located in a different room.
The computer then process these images to generate into a detailed image. A radiologist will monitor the entire process from a different room with the help of the microphone and speakers.
You will hear loud noises throughout the procedure from the MRI machine. The entire process normally takes around 90 minutes depending on the body part that is examined.
What are the risks involved?
Normally MRI scan does not involve any risk. It does not use radiation to visualize the inner parts like other imaging techniques. But the patients with some medical implants cannot take the MRI due to the magnetic field produced the machine.
If the contrast dye is used, you may develop some allergic reactions. So it is important to inform your doctor if you have any known allergies for contrast material. There is also a mild risk of kidney failure due to the contrast dye.
