Frequently Asked Questions About MR Spectroscopy

What is MR Spectroscopy?

The nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is the other name for MRI Spectroscopy. It examines the biochemical changes taking place in the brain. It is a non-invasive and painless method to visualize the brain. The tissue changes in stroke and epilepsy can also be detected with MRI Spectroscopy. It also detects and identifies different diseases causing biochemical changes in the brain.

The normal MRI scan can detect and identify the location of the tumor. But the chemical composition of the normal tissue and the abnormal tissue can be detected only by MRI spectroscopy. It is an integral tool to evaluate brain tumors.

Why is it done?

The MR Brain Spectroscopy is done to measure the biochemical change in the brain caused by the tumor. Your doctor may ask you to take the test if he suspects a tumor in the brain. The symptoms of brain tumor are

  • Severe headache
  • Fatigue
  • Drowsiness
  • Difficulty to walk
  • Loss of vision
  • Facial weakness or numbness
  • Nausea
  • Sleeping problems

How does MR Spectroscopy work?

The MRI spectroscopy measures the chemical metabolism changes of a suspected tumor. It examines the protons and hydrogen ion molecules. The different metabolism is measured to differentiate between types of tumors such as lipid, lactate, creatine, choline, etc. The neurologist can measure the detect the type of tissue by measuring and comparing the different metabolism with the normal brain tissue.

The MRI spectroscopy creates a graph of the level of metabolites present in the tissue. Your doctor determines whether the tumor is growing or dying with the help of these graphs.

How should I prepare?

There is no special preparation required for the MR Brain Spectroscopy. You will be asked not to take any caffeine prior to the test. It is advisable to wear comfortable clothing during the test. Do not carry items with metallic content such as jewelry during the scan.

How is it done?

The MRI spectroscopy is similar to the conventional MRI scan. You will lie on the table that slides into the MRI scanner. It creates images using magnetic pulses and radio waves. During the scan, you will hear loud noises from the machine for several minutes.

You may be injected with a contrast dye to produce an enhanced image. It is important to stay still during the scan. If there is any movement, the pictures will be a blur.

The scan will take a longer time compared to the conventional MRI scan. The scan usually takes 45 minutes to 60 minutes from the start to the end.

What are the risks involved?

The MR Brain Spectroscopy is a non-invasive and painless technique. There are no possible side effects from MRI spectroscopy. You may develop allergic reactions due to the contrast dye. But the test has its own limitations.

A person with a cardiac pacemaker, metallic implant, a cochlear implant, a gunshot wound, and a permanent tattoo is advised to take the test only after consulting with your doctor. It may cause discomfort or injury to the person.

How do I get my results?

The radiologist will review and interpret the test results. He will then make a report on the result and send it to your doctor. Your doctor will explain the result.
