Frequently Asked Questions About MRI Defecography Scan

What is an MRI Defecography?

MRI Defecography is a non-invasive radiology procedure that helps the doctor to evaluate the proper functioning of your pelvic muscles. It is primarily recommended to determine the cause of fecal incontinence (inability to control bowel movements),  frequent constipation, and other conditions such as pelvic organ prolapse and pelvic floor disorder.

Uses of MRI Defecography Explained.

The MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging that is a process where the machine’s specification allows the radiologist to take pictures of the internal organs of the patient. The machine uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to create informative images of the patient.

During MR Defecography the images are obtained in different stages of defecation. This helps the doctor to assess the working of pelvic muscles and other rectal functioning. Defecography MRI is not as painful as colonoscopy and does not involve the use of any radiations unless the doctor asks for an MRI Defecography with Contrast.

MRI Scan Defecography is also known as MRD (Magnetic Resonance Defecography, MR Defecography, and MRI Defecogram.

Why is it Recommended?

An MRI Scan Defecography is recommended by a doctor when they want:

  • to assess the functioning of your pelvic muscles during a bowel movement.
  • to check your other rectal functioning.
  • to evaluate the reason for your fecal incontinence (inability to control the passage of waste material from the body).
  • to determine the cause of your frequent constipation
  • to assess the condition of the patient who is suffering from ODS – Obstructed Defecation Syndrome (chronic constipation)
  • to detect the chances of cancer or tumor in the rectal area of the patient.
  • to diagnose diseases related to rectal functioning such as pelvic floor disorders, hernia, pelvic organ prolapse, or rectal prolapse.
  • to plan a surgery or further treatment possibilities.
Why is MRI Defecography Scan Done?

What is the required preparation for an MRI Defecography?

There are certain things that you must be careful about before going for a Defecography MRI Scan.

  • You will be asked to remove all the metallic ornaments from your body including hairpins, metallic jewelry or glasses, hearing aids, and any removable dental work. It will be a better idea to leave your metallic valuables at home.
  • Inform your radiologist beforehand if you have any Aneurysm clips, a heart pacemaker,  any metal plates, clips, pins, screws, or surgical staples, or any implanted metal object in your body.
  • Wear simple and loosely fitted clothes without any embellishments. Prefer wearing a two-piece cloth as you will be asked to remove your lower garment.
  • You may be asked to hold your urine for 30 minutes before your scan.
  • Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or claustrophobic (who has fear of confined spaces)
  • Tell your doctor if you are a diabetic, they may ask you to stop your regular pills for a while.

What is the Procedure?

An MRI scanner is a cylindrically shaped machine that has an attached sliding table and multiple sets of cameras. The cameras take multiple images while the patient is slid into the machine while scanning the affected area. The machine is operated by a professional radiologist who monitors your position and comfort. They track the stages of your defecation and obtain informative images for your further treatment procedures. The whole procedure takes around 30-60 minutes to complete.

The radiologist will insert a thin plastic tube called a catheter into your rectum and inject an amount of 200 mL of gel through the catheter into your rectum. The gel will put pressure on your body parts in that area that will make different tissues show up better on the MRI.

The doctor will then remove the catheter from your rectum. You will be provided with a diaper to avoid leakages or a towel will be placed underneath you to absorb leakages. You may feel some pain or discomfort during the insertion in your rectum. Tell your doctor if you are having discomfort.

Your radiologist will instruct you to do certain bowel movements such as squeezing and straining anal opening or defecating. Images will be taken while your muscles are relaxed. You will be asked to hold your breath for short durations to avoid movements that may lead to blurry images.

Generally, the results are available within 24 hours after the test. Your doctor will be in the right position to interpret your reports.
