Frequently Asked Questions About Procalcitonin / PCT Test

What is Procalcitonin Test?

The Procalcitonin test which is also called a PCT test helps to measure the level of Procalcitonin in the blood. Procalcitonin is a peptide produced by different cells in our body in response to a bacterial infection such as sepsis.

If a person is suffering from a bacterial infection, the level of PCT in the blood will rise. It is an effective tool to diagnose medical conditions such as inflammation, sepsis, infection, etc. It is primarily done to detect and diagnose sepsis in an ill person.

The procalcitonin test helps to examine a critically infected person with sepsis, differentiate between bacterial and non-bacterial infection, monitor an ongoing treatment, diagnosing urinary tract infections, etc.

When is the Procalcitonin test recommended?

Generally, the Procalcitonin (PCT) test is done when a person shows systematic bacterial infection or sepsis symptoms such as

  • Fever
  • Shivering
  • Heavy breathing
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Body pain
  • Confusion
  • Urinating less frequently

Normally the newborns, infants, old people, and post-surgery patients are at high risk of developing sepsis. It is also ordered if a person is infected by meningitis. In some cases, it is done if a child shows the symptoms of having a urinary tract infection.

Preparation for the test.

The Procalcitonin test is a simple blood test. There are no special preparations required for the PCT test. You can have your normal diet and carry on regular activities prior to the test. It is recommended to wear half sleeves clothes for the procedure, as it will be convenient to draw the blood samples.

The procedure of the test.

The Procalcitonin test procedure is similar to that of any other blood test. A nurse will put a tight band around your arm to make your veins swell. Then a cotton pad soaked in a sanitary liquid will be used to clean the area from where the blood is to be drawn.

A needle will be injected into your vein to draw the blood samples. A cotton ball will be pressed on the punctured site to stop the bleeding after the needle is removed. The blood samples will be then sent to the laboratory for further testing.

The Procalcitonin normal range of test results

The blood samples will be tested to determine the level of procalcitonin in the blood. This indicates that whether a person is at risk of developing sepsis. The normal range of the procalcitonin test is

  • Normal Range: 0 to 0.05 micrograms per liter of PCT
  • Infected by Sepsis: 0.5 micro-grams per liter to 2 micrograms per liter of PCT
  • Low risk of Sepsis: > 0.5 micro-grams per liter of PCT
  • Moderate risk of having Sepsis: 2 micro-grams per liter to 10 micrograms per liter of PCT
  • High risk of Sepsis: more than 10 micrograms per liter of PCT

The low level of procalcitonin in the blood indicates that a person who is seriously ill have a low risk of developing sepsis and vice versa.

If the test result of a person who is already undergoing treatment for sepsis or any other bacterial infection shows decreasing procalcitonin level, it indicates that it is responding to the therapy.

You may also be asked to take a blood culture test, urine culture test, complete blood count (CBC) test, C-reactive protein  (CRP) test, blood gas test, etc in addition to the procalcitonin test to widely understand the test results.
