Frequently Asked Questions About Rubella Test

What is Rubella Test?

It is primarily done to detect the presence of rubella antibodies in your body and to determine whether you are infected by rubella virus in the past.

Rubella virus is responsible for causing red rashes on the face, limbs, etc. This infection caused by the virus is commonly known as Rubella or German Measles infection.

The infants and people above 50 years of age are more prone to this infection. But the infection fades away after 6 to 7 days after the rashes begin to appear.

But it can be serious for those women who are pregnant. If a person is infected by the German Measles when she is pregnant, there are more chances that the child may have eye, heart, or hearing problems. Sometimes you may give birth to the child too soon.

This test examines the level of rubella antibodies, to be sure that your body can resist rubella infection.

Signs and Symptoms of Rubella Infection

The rubella infection shows only mild symptoms. Sometimes the signs of the infection begin to appear only after 2 weeks of infection.

You will get red rashes in the face which spreads throughout the body during the course of infection. But these rashes fade away by itself after 5 or 6 days.

Other than this you may experience fever, the ache in joints, inflammation of lymph nodes, red eyes, etc.

Preparation for Rubella Test

The rubella test is a simple blood test. There are no special preparations required for the test. You can have your normal diet and carry on regular activities prior to the test.

The Procedure of Rubella Test

The rubella test is done with a sample of blood. A nurse will put a tight band around your arm to make your veins more visible. Then the area from where the blood is to be drawn will be cleaned with a sanitary liquid.

Then a needle will be injected into the vein to draw the blood sample. After drawing the blood cotton will be pressed against the puncture site to stop the bleeding.

The blood sample may be tested against IGG and IgM antibodies or in real-time PCR method as per the requirement.

Generally, you will be asked to take the Rubella IGG and IGM test if you are pregnant. The baby may also take the test after the birth if your doctor suspects an infection.

Sample Test Result of Rubella Test

If the test result is positive for the IgM antibody, then it means that you are infected by the virus and vice versa. But the IgM antibody cannot be detected if a person has a weak immune system.

In the case of IgG antibodies, the positive result says that you have enough antibodies in your immune system to resist against rubella virus and vice versa.
