Which are the most common Sexually Transmitted Diseases?

The common sexually transmitted diseases with their symptoms are listed below:

Different types of STD's explained.
Types of Sexually Transmitted Disease.

Chlamydia:

Chlamydia is a common sexually transmitted disease (STD) that is very much curable. But if left untreated, chlamydia can make it difficult for a woman to get pregnant. Most people who have chlamydia have no symptoms. Even if symptoms show up, they may not appear until several weeks after you have sex with an infected partner.

Chlamydia can infect both men and women. Symptoms can include:

  • an unusual sore
  • a smelly discharge
  • burning when urinating
  • bleeding between periods in women.

In men, there can be discharged from the penis or there can be swelling in testicles. The infection can spread to the tube that carries sperm from the testicles, causing pain and fever.

Chlamydia may cause no symptoms but can damage women’s reproductive systems. It is important for a sexually active woman with new or multiple sex partners, or a sex partner who has an STD, to get tested for chlamydia every year.

Laboratory tests can diagnose chlamydia. The test is called Chlamydia Trachomatis IgM which is a simple blood test looking for active antibodies against chlamydia antigen. The lab report should be discussed with your doctor. Chlamydia can be treated easily.

Gonorrhea:

Gonorrhea is the infection of the genital area, throat, and rectum. Gonorrhea is a very common infection among young people ages 15-24. Anyone who is sexually active can get gonorrhea through unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral sex. Also, pregnant women with gonorrhea can pass on the infection to their babies during childbirth.

Some men infected with gonorrhea may have no symptoms at all. However, the following symptoms may appear in some:

  • Painful or burning sensation while urinating
  • Discharge from the penis of White, yellow or green color
  • Swollen testicles (although less common).

Most of the women with gonorrhea do not have any symptoms. Those women who have symptoms have mild ones which can be mistaken for a bladder or vaginal infection. Symptoms in women can include:

  • Painful or burning sensation when urinating
  • Vaginal bleeding between periods
  • Increased vaginal discharge

Sometimes women don’t have any symptoms but they are at risk of developing serious complications from the infection.

Infection in the rectum due to gonorrhea in both men and women show the following symptoms:

  • Discharge
  • Anal itching
  • Soreness or painful bowel movement
  • Bleeding

Untreated gonorrhea can cause serious and permanent health problems in both men and women. In women, untreated gonorrhea can cause Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) which may result in ectopic pregnancy or infertility. Men can also get long-term pain in the tubes attached to the testicles. In some cases, it may lead to sterility.

Gonorrhea can be cured. It is important to get diagnosed early as medication cannot undo any permanent damage caused by the disease. A simple urine test called a Gonorrhea DNA Test can specifically diagnose the disease.

Genital Herpes:

It is caused by two types of viruses. The viruses are known as Herpes Simplex Type 1 and Herpes Simplex Type 2.

Often a person infected with the virus does not know that he has herpes because there are no visible symptoms.

Sometimes symptoms appear in the form of:

  • painful blisters or open sores in the genital area or on the thighs or buttocks.
  • First small red bumps appear which develop into blisters and then become painful open sores.
  • In a few days, the open sores become crusty and then heal without leaving a scar.
  • The first episode of genital herpes may show up symptoms like a headache, fever, muscle aches, difficult or painful urination, vaginal discharge, and itching and burning sensation of the genital area.

Herpes is very contagious. You can get genital herpes by having sexual contact with others who are having outbreaks of herpes. The virus can also spread from one area to another on the same person. Both the viruses, HSV-1 and HSV-2 lie dormant in nerve cells and may cause “outbreaks” at unpredictable times.

IgG testing is the best option for accurately diagnosing herpes simplex 1 and 2.Type-specific blood tests look for not only whether you have antibodies against a herpes virus but whether they are against HSV-1 or HSV-2. These tests are:

  • HSV 1 And 2 OR Herpes Simplex Virus IGG
  • HSV 1 And 2 OR Herpes Simplex Virus IgM

Do consult your doctor after getting your report.

Syphilis:

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by bacteria called Treponema Palladium. Syphilis can cause serious health problems if left untreated. Syphilis is divided into stages (primary, secondary, latent, and tertiary). There are different signs and symptoms associated with each stage.

Click to know more about Syphilis and VDRL test.

VDRL (Venereal Disease Research Laboratory) test is a screening test for syphilis. It is a simple blood test.

RPR test (Rapid Plasma Reagin) – in addition to screening, is useful in monitoring treatment for syphilis.

If you are pregnant and have syphilis, you can pass on the infection to your unborn baby. Syphilis can lead to a low birth weight baby or in some cases results in a still-born. To prevent this, you should be tested for syphilis at least once during your pregnancy. If the test comes back positive, you should be immediately treated.

Syphilis can be cured with the right antibiotic given by your doctor. Follow-up testing should be done after the treatment.

Hepatitis B

Hepatitis B is a viral infection which if chronic can be potentially life-threatening. The acute form of hepatitis is less dangerous and usually gets better in a couple of weeks. The chronic form can inflame the liver and may cause liver cancer.

One can get infected by Hepatitis B by coming in contact with blood or other body fluid of an infected person. The virus can infect you if:

  • Have unprotected sex with the infected person.
  • Share needles with an infected person.
  • Share razor or toothbrushes with an infected person.
  • Get a tattoo with an unsterilized needle.

Hepatitis infected mother can pass it to her baby during delivery. Therefore, it is very important for pregnant ladies to get themselves tested for the virus.

Due to the absence of symptoms, many people never come to know if they have the infection. Sometimes some symptoms may appear which include:

  • Mild fever
  • Lethargy
  • Headache
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Belly pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Yellow eyes or skin

As most people are asymptotic or have symptoms common to other illnesses, the diagnosis can be made only by a blood test. The blood test is the HBsAg antigen test. To know more about the test please click Guide to Hepatitis B Test in India.

HIV (AIDS):

HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus. If you get infected by this virus, it can cause acquired immunodeficiency syndrome or AIDS if not treated. HIV attacks the body’s immune system, specifically T cells which help fight off infections. As the level of T cell decreases in an HIV infected body it becomes susceptible to other infections or cancers. One can’t get rid of HIV completely, even with treatment. So, once you get HIV, you have it for life. But if caught early the disease can be controlled and lives can be prolonged.

HIV is asymptomatic in most cases. Within 2 to 4 weeks of catching the infection, people may experience a flu-like illness, which may last for a few weeks. If you think you have been exposed to HIV through sex or drug use and have flu-like symptoms, you should undergo an HIV diagnostic test.

HIV-1 and HIV-2 are the two main types of HIV.HIV-1 is the most widespread type worldwide. HIV-2, a less prevalent and less dangerous.

Large genetic differences between HIV-1 and HIV-2 viruses mean that two different tests need to be done.

Hepatitis C:

It is an infection of the liver caused by the Hepatitis virus. Most people with hepatitis C have no symptoms. But the following symptoms may be noticed:

  • Yellow eyes and skin, as well as dark urine (jaundice)
  • Stomach pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue

You can catch Hepatitis C if you:

  • Have sex, especially if you have an STD, with several partners.
  • Share needles with an infected person
  • Were born to a mother infected with hepatitis C
  • Had a blood transfusion or organ transplant before the year 1992

Hepatitis C cannot spread through water, food, or air. You cannot get infected through casual contact with the infected person.

To test yourself for Hepatitis C you undergo a blood test called anti HCV test, to know more about the test, you can go to Hepatitis C Test in India

What are the benefits of STD Test?

Most of the STDs are asymptomatic, they do not show any signs or symptoms. But having chronic STDs may cause long-term organ damage and be life-threatening. Also, if symptoms show up, they are usually mild and resemble the symptoms of other diseases. For example, signs and symptoms of gonorrhea can be like Chlamydia but the two infections require different antibiotic treatments. Since the disorders have similar symptoms, a diagnostic test is required often test for Neisseria gonorrhea and Chlamydia trachomatis at the same time.

It is very important to get tested for STD during your pregnancy as infection can pass on to the baby during birth and lead to serious health issues for the baby.

How can you prevent yourself from getting STDs?

The best prevention is to avoid exposure since you can’t prevent some of the STDs from getting vaccinated. Some precautions you can take are:

  • Don’t share personal items like your razor, comb, or tooth-brush.
  • For intravenous drugs use new needles. don’t share needles.
  • If you have multiple sexual partners, practice safe sex.
  • Not getting a tattoo in an unregulated environment.
  • By eating a healthy and balanced diet and avoiding alcohol. Obesity and alcohol intake, can it difficult to treat STDs.
  • Women who are pregnant should speak to their doctor about having a screening test for the STD
