The Procedure of the TSH Test
Thyroid Stimulating Hormone is the full form of TSH. It is a kind of hormone produced by the pituitary gland present in the brain. The TSH is responsible for regulating the hormones released by the thyroid gland.
The thyroid gland which is located in the front of the neck releases three primary hormones called triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), and calcitonin.
The thyroid gland controls the metabolism and growth of our body by releasing these hormones at the right amount.
The TSH test is done to measure the level of thyroid-stimulating hormone in our body and to determine the cause of abnormal TSH levels which may lead to various health problems.
The TSH test helps to know whether the thyroid gland is overactive (hyperthyroidism) and underactive (hypothyroidism). Your doctor may ask you to take the TSH test if you suffer from the following symptoms
- Loss in weight
- Bulge in eye
- Difficulty in sleeping
- Shivering in hand
- Hair loss
- Weight gain
- Intolerance to cold
- Irregularity in the menstrual cycle
- Puffy skin
The TSH test is also done at regular intervals to monitor the treatment for a known thyroid disorder. In some cases, your doctor may ask you to take a total or free T4 & T3 test along with the TSH test to determine the cause for thyroid disorder.
The TSH test is a simple blood test. No special preparation is required for the TSH test. But it is important to inform your doctor if you are on your medications as some of them may affect the test results.
The TSH test is similar to any other blood test. A nurse will put an elastic band around your arm to make the veins visible to insert the needle. The area where the blood is drawn will be sanitized with a disinfectant liquid. Then a needle will be inserted into your vein to draw the blood. After removing the needle a cotton ball is used to put pressure on the area from where the blood is drawn.
The TSH test does not result in any possible risk. You may experience slight pain or bruise at the spot where the needle is inserted which will fade away quickly. It is necessary to inform your doctor if you have any bleeding disorders prior to the test.
The test result shows if there is an abnormality in the TSH level. If the TSH level is high then it means that your thyroid is not producing enough hormones which is called hypothyroidism. The low level of TSH means that the thyroid is releasing more than the required amount of hormone which is called hyperthyroidism.
The TSH test says whether the hormone level is too high or low. But it does not explain the reason for these abnormalities in the TSH level. Your doctor may ask you to take other tests to determine the cause of thyroid disorders such as
- T4 thyroid hormone test
- T3 thyroid hormone test
- TSH receptor antibody
- Anti TPO test
The TSH test is primarily done to determine the level of TSH in our body. But various factors affect the TSH level such as
- Medications such as steroids, dopamine, etc
- High level of iodine in the body
- Intake of supplements that contain thyroid hormone
These factors have an impact on the TSH level in our body by increasing or decreasing the hormone level in our body.
There are many effective hypothyroidism home remedies that are more efficient with no possible side effects. It is also be treated with the help of synthetic thyroid hormone pills or as a last resort surgery is done to cure hypothyroidism.
Hyperthyroidism can be treated with the help of
- Radioactive iodine
- Antithyroid medicines
- Beta-blockers – to reduce rapid heart rate
- In rare case, surgery may be done to remove the thyroid
