What is Ultrasound / Sonography?
Sonography which is also called as Ultrasound or USG is an effective non-invasive tool to detect and diagnose any abnormalities in the inner parts of our body.
The sonography uses high frequency radio waves to visualize the inner parts of body. Unlike other imaging techniques, sonography does not uses any kind of radiation to capture images.
A ultrasound / sonography is most commonly used during pregnancy to examine the health of the fetus at different stages of pregnancy.

What are the preparations required for the test?
Ultrasound / Sonography procedure normally depends on the study and the part of the body that is examined.
For Sonography abdomen, you may be asked to fast for at least 8 to 12 hours before the procedure. The undigested food may block the sound waves partially providing unclear information on the body part.
You may be asked to eat a fat free diet before the evening of the procedure if certain body parts such as gallbladder, spleen, etc is to be examined.
If the bladder is examined, you should hold the urine for few hours as the procedure requires full bladder to get detailed information.
If you are on medication, consult with your doctor regarding this. You may be asked to follow some special instructions by your doctor.
How is the procedure performed?
Sonography uses sound waves to capture live images of our body parts. A transducer is used to send high frequency sound waves into the body.
You may be asked to change into a gown provided by the lab and lie down on the examination table. The body part that is to be examined will be kept exposed throughout the procedure.
A lubricating gel will be applied on your skin by a technician to avoid any friction between the skin and the transducers while rubbing on the body part which is examined.
The transducer send the sound waves into the body which bounce back in the form of echo when it hit against the internal organs. These echos will be collected by the transducer and send it to a specialized computer to generate into image.
Generally, the entire process of ultrasound / sonography lasts upto 30 minutes depending on the study.
What are the risks associated with Sonography?
Ultrasound / Sonography does not involve any side effects. As the sonography uses sound waves to capture live pictures, it is completely safe as you are not exposed to any kind of radiation.
