What is sonography?

The sonography which is also referred to as ultrasound or USG is an effective tool to examine the internal organs of our body. It uses sound waves with high frequency to visualize and capture the live images of our inner parts.
The sonography does not use any radiation to visualize the internal organs, unlike other imaging techniques. Because of this it is most commonly used during pregnancy to examine the health of the fetus.
It is also capable of detecting the abnormalities in the internal organs such as the liver, bladder, brain in infants, pancreas, ovaries, testicles, thyroid, spleen, uterus, blood vessels, etc.
Why is sonography done?

Sonography is done to detect and diagnose various abnormalities in our body such as
- Gallbladder disease
- Lump in breast
- Thyroid disorder
- Genital or prostate problems
- Metabolic bone disease
- Joint inflammation
- Cysts
- Blood vessel blockage
- Abnormal spleen
It is also done to detect and diagnose abnormalities in the fetus during pregnancy.
How should I prepare for the sonography?
The procedure for the sonography normally depends on the body part that is to be examined.
If the abdomen is to be examined, the undigested food may block the sound waves producing unclear images. So your doctor may ask you to fast for 8 to 12 hours for the sonography abdomen.
You may be asked to eat a fat-free diet the evening before the test and fast till the time of procedure if the gallbladder, liver, spleen, etc are examined. If the bladder is examined you should drink enough water and hold the urine as the procedure requires a full bladder.
It is important to consult with your doctor if you are taking any medicines during the test. Your doctor may provide special instructions regarding the intake of medicines.
How is sonography done?
You may be asked to change into a loose gown provided by the lab before the test. You will be asked to lie down on the examination table with your body part to be examined exposed.
The sonography uses high-frequency sound waves to visualize the internal organs. It is done with the help of a transducer. The transducer is a device that sends high-frequency sound waves into the body.
A technician will apply a lubricating gel on the body part that is to examine. This prevents any fraction when the transducer is rubbed against the skin.
The sound waves sent by the transducer hits the internal organs and bounce back in the form of an echo. The transducer collects these echos and sends it to a computer to that process the image. The computer generates a picture of the body part that is examined.
It normally takes around 30 minutes to complete the entire procedure.
What are the risks involved in sonography?
There are no potential risks involved in the sonography. It uses high-frequency sound waves to produce the picture of the internal organs, unlike other imaging techniques that use X-ray beams. So you will not be exposed to the radiation in case of sonography.
