What is urine culture test?
A urine culture test is done to detect germs or bacteria in the urine that causes Urinary Tract Infection (UTI). The urinary tract includes kidney, bladder, ureters and urethra. The bacteria causing UTI enter the urinary tract through the urethra or bladder. It can grow rapidly causing infection in the urinary tract. UTIs are more common in female as the urethra is shorter and close to the anus.
Who should take the test?
The urinary culture and sensitivity test should be done if you experience the symptoms of the urinary tract infection. The most common symptoms of UTI are
- Painful or burning sensation during urination
- Urge to frequent urinating (but little or nothing comes out)
- Discomfort in the abdominal area
- Difficulty in urinary stream
- Urine appears cloud or reddish
UTIs are more common during pregnancy. It is advisable to go through urine culture test at various points of your pregnancy as a precautionary measure. If it goes unnoticed, then it may lead to premature labor or poor labor. The infection may also spread to the kidneys and damage them.
How to prepare for the test?
There is no special preparation required for the test. You may be asked not to pee one hour and drink a glass of water 15 minutes prior the test.
What is the procedure of the test?
The urine sample for the test is collected with a urinary collection kit. It is the most commonly used method. The mid stream urine sample is required for the test. To make sure that you get clean urine sample, you should keep the following in the mind
- Wash your hands
- If you are a women, spread the labia (outer lips) of vagina and clean from front to back. Men should wipe the tip of the penis
- Don’t pee in container directly. Urinate a little in the toilet and then collect 1 or 2 ounces of urine in the container. This is called midstream collection
- Wash your hands after collecting the sample
In some cases a catheter may be used to collect the sample. It is a thin rubber tube which is inserted through the urethra into the bladder. If the previous attempts to collect uncontaminated sample is unsuccessful, then a needle may be used to get the urine sample from the bladder. This is called supra-pubic aspiration.
What are the risks in urine culture test?
There are no possible side effects from the urine culture test. In case of sample collected from catheter, you may feel some pressure or discomfort.
When will you get results?
It will usually take one to three days to get the urine culture test results. The test results say whether you are infected with the urinary tract infection or not. If you are infected, then mostly antibiotics is enough to cure the infection.
