The X Ray is the oldest and most commonly used imaging techniques to detect and diagnose any abnormalities in the inner parts of our body.
X Ray is used for decades to diagnose various medical disorders. It uses X Ray beams to visualize and capture the images of the internal organs of our body.
Why is it done?
X Ray is normally done to examine the medical conditions such as
Damages or fracture
Blood vessel blockage
Enlargement of heart
How should I prepare for the scan?
There are no special preparations required for the X Ray. You should not carry any metallic objects such as watch, jewelry, keys, etc as it may block the X Ray from passing into the body. If you have any kind of medical implants, inform your doctor prior to the scan.
You may be asked to fast for few hours before the scan, if the gastrointestinal tract is examined. You may also be given some medicines to clear the bowls.
How is the procedure performed?
You will be asked to change into a gown provided by the lab and lie down on a table or sit or stand during the procedure depending on the X Ray study and body part that is examined.
X Ray beams will be sent into the body which will be absorbed at different rates by various internal organs. These signals will be then collected by a detector in the X Ray machine and sent to a specialized computer to process into the image.
In some cases, to produce more enhanced images a contrast dye may be used. It may be either given orally or injected in the vein.
What are the risks associated with X Ray?
X Ray uses radiation to generate images of the internal body parts. The radiation produced by the machine is generally safe for the adults. But the radiation may harm the infants. So it is not advised to take an X ray if you are pregnant.
Some people may develop allergic reactions due to the contrast dye. If you already have kidney disorders the chances of kidney failure are more if the contrast material is used.
