Brief about PET CT scan.
PET CT scan is a non-intrusive and painless procedure. It is capable of differentiating the cancerous and non-cancerous cells. The PET CT scan process is a mixture of positron emission tomography and computed tomography. It also helps diagnose medical conditions like Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, etc.
A compact quantity of radioactive material is injected into a vein. This material under the PET scan machine can monitor the blood flow, oxygen use, and metabolism in the body at the cellular level.
It is not considered to be harmful as the quantity of radioactive material is low.
CT scans assists in providing a complete picture of tissues and organs, the PET scan discloses the activities of the tissues and organs. Accurate results are provided when the CT and PET scan are combined.
How is a PET CT scan executed?
- At the starting of the procedure, a compact amount of radioactive substance is injected into a vein.
- It takes an hour for the radioactive material to get absorbed by the body.
- After an hour, the patient is taken to the PET CT scan room and is asked to lie down on a table there.
- When the patient is on the table, it slides into the PET scan machine.
- The whole process of the PET CT scan will take an hour to complete.
Note: The patient will be asked to fast for 8 to 12 hours. Tea or coffee should be avoided and the patient is allowed to drink water.
Why is a full-body PET CT scan is required?
The major reason for prescribing a PET CT scan is to differentiate the cancerous and non-cancerous cells. The PET CT Scan is required for the following:
- Diagnose cancer
- Make decisions about cancer therapy
- Find out how well is the body behaving to the cancer treatment
- Brain disorders
- Disorders of heart
- Disorders of the central nervous system
Risks associated with PET CT scan.
The radiation from the X-rays and the radioactive substance is exposed to the patient during the PET CT scan. As the radioactive material is low it is not considered to be harmful.
However, for pregnant women, the radiation may affect the fetus, so they are usually not adviced to take a PET CT scan.
