What is an Ultrasound?
Ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses sound waves to capture live images of our internal organs. It helps to detect and diagnose various abnormalities such as
- Cysts
- Cancer
- Abnormalities in the pregnancy
- Gallstones
- Digestive problems
- Blockage in blood vessels

As it does not use any kind of radiation, ultrasound is done during pregnancy to examine the health of the fetus. An ultrasound scan uses high-frequency radio waves to examine the internal parts of our body.
Ultrasound is also generally called Sonography or USG scan.
Why is an Ultrasound Scan Done?

Ultrasound is an effective tool to examine almost every part of our body to detect and diagnose various conditions such as swelling or pain and other medical disorders in the inner parts of our body. It is commonly done to examine the following body parts
- Uterus
- Abdomen
- Brain in Infants
- Bladder
- Kidney
- Liver
- Blood Vessels
- Eyes
- Pancreas
- Ovaries
- Spleen
- Thyroid
Apart from this, it is most commonly done at different stages of pregnancy to examine the health of the fetus. It is also used by anesthetists to guide the needle with anesthetic solutions near the nerves.
How should I Prepare for an Ultrasound Scan?
The preparations required for an ultrasound scan vary depending on the study and the body part that is examined. In the case of an ultrasound abdomen, you should fast for at least 8 hours as the food particles may block the sound waves and do not show a clear picture.
In the case of the bladder examination, the procedure requires the full bladder to obtain detailed information. So you should drink more water and hold urine until the completion of the procedure.
It is advised to consult with your doctor regarding the preparations for your ultrasound study prior to the procedure.
How is an Ultrasound Scan Done?
Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to obtain images of our internal organs. The sound waves will be sent into our bodies by a device called a transducer. It then collects the echos that bounce back after hitting the organs and sends them to a special computer to process into images.
You will be asked to change into a gown with the body part that is to be examined exposed. A technician will apply a lubricating gel on that body part to avoid any friction while rubbing the transducer against the skin. The live images can be seen on a computer screen.
Normally, an ultrasound scan takes up to 30 minutes to complete the entire procedure.
