What is Mammography?
Mammography is an advanced imaging procedure done to detect and diagnose breast cancer at an early stage. It uses an X-ray to examine the soft tissues in the breast. It is also capable of differentiating the normal tissues from the cancerous one.
The mammography test is also referred to as a mammogram.
The cancerous cells are nothing but the abnormal cells that form from a mother cell. These abnormal cells are formed due to mutation. These abnormal cells will then grow and divide forming tumors.
If these tumors are left untreated, then they may turn into cancer which can be fatal.
Who are at a high risk of developing Breast Cancer?
The following people are at a high risk of developing breast cancer.
- Women above 40 years of age.
- Women with medical conditions such as BRCA 1 and BRCA 2.
- Those who undergone chest radiation therapy.
- Women with a family history of breast cancer.
It is generally recommended to take the mammography test at least once a year if you are above 35 years of age.

- A lump or thickened skin in any one of the breast
- Change in size or shape of one or both breasts
- Discharge from either of nipples or nipples sinking in.

What are the preparations required for the Mammography test?
Generally, there are no special preparations required for a mammography test. You can have your normal diet and carry on regular activities prior to the procedure.
You are advised not to apply any kind of powder, lotion, deodorant, etc on the skin.
How is Mammography done?
During the procedure, the technician will ask you to place your breast in a mammogram unit which can scan it at different angles. During the scan, the technician will compress your breast with a paddle to even out the thickness of the breast and spread the tissues to detect any abnormalities in the breast.
Both breasts will be scanned at two different angles producing four X-Ray images. If your doctor feels it appropriate, he may ask to take additional images for further diagnostic purposes.
Are there any risks in the Mammography test?
No, there are no risks in a mammography test. However, you will be exposed to a little amount of radiation during the procedure which is generally harmless.
It is recommended not to take the mammography test if you are breastfeeding a newborn baby.
