Why is an HSG Test performed?
An HSG test is performed to evaluate the following –
- Size of the uterus
- Shape and health of the uterus
- If the fallopian tubes are blocked or malformed
The doctor may suggest an HSG Test in the following conditions –
- Tumors
- Uterine fibroids
- Endometrial (uterine) polyps
- Adhesions
- Blockage of the fallopian tubes
What is the procedure of a HSG Test?
Before the HSG test procedure, the doctor may give the patient a sedative that helps relax the muscles of the uterus. This is done to avoid cramping during the test.
During the HSG test –
- The patient will be asked to wear a gown around the waist area and lie down on her back bringing up the feet in a “frog-leg” position.
- The doctor will then place a metal instrument called a speculum inside the vagina to visualize the cervix.
- The doctor then analyses the uterus to check for any abnormalities.
How to prepare for an HSG Test?
A few things should be kept in mind before taking an HSG test. These include –
- Carrying all medical reports or scans with you
- The test should be taken according to the time given by the doctor – 7 to 10 days after the first menstruation cycle but before ovulation
- In case of any existing IUD’s – discuss with the doctor beforehand
- Medication may be prescribed in case of any discomfort before X-Ray
- Let the doctor know in case you are expecting to be pregnant or are already pregnant
- Comfortable clothing should be worn for the test
- Avoid any metallic objects like jewelry, chains, etc.
