Frequently Asked Questions About CPK Test
What is the CPK Test?
Creatinine Phosphokinase is the full form of the CPK test. CPK is an enzyme that is responsible for muscle function. It is also called creatinine kinase. The CPK isoenzyme can be divided into three parts namely CPK 1, CPK 2, and CPK 3.
The CPK 1 is primarily found in the brain and lungs. The abnormal level of CPK 1 may indicate brain cancer, seizure, brain injury, pulmonary disease, etc.
CPK 2 is found in the heart. The high levels of CPK 2 may indicate heart injury, possible risk of heart attack, inflammation of heart muscle, etc.
CPK 3 is found in the skeletal muscle. The abnormal level of CPK 3 means that you may have damaged muscles, your muscles are immobile for a long time, inflamed muscle, muscular dystrophy, seizures, etc.
Creatinine phosphokinase test measures the level of CPK enzymes in the blood to detect the damaged area in your body.
Why is the Creatinine Phosphokinase test done?
CPK test is normally done to detect muscle damage in your body and to monitor the treatment. Your doctor will ask you to take the CPK test if you show any signs of having muscle damage such as
- Pain in muscles
- Muscle weakness
- Dark urination
Other than this the CPK test is done to detect various muscle diseases such as polymyositis, dermatomyositis, malignant hyperthermia, etc.
CPK isoenzymes test is also done in the emergency room if you show any symptoms of a heart attack. It is done to detect the cause of chest pain and diagnose a heart attack.
Is there any preparation required for CPK Test?
CPK test is a simple blood test. There are no special preparations required for the test. You can have your normal diet and carry on regular activities prior to the test. You may be asked to stop taking certain medications such as steroids, amphotericin, etc as they might affect the test results.
It is advised to consult with your doctor regarding the intake of medications. It is recommended to wear half-sleeved cloth to the test for convenience.
How is the CPK test done?
The procedure of the CPK test is almost similar to that of any other blood test. A nurse will put an elastic band around your arm to make the veins swell. A disinfectant liquid will be used to clean the area from where the blood is to be drawn.
A needle will be injected into the vein to draw the blood samples. After removing the needle a cotton ball will be pressed on the punctured site to stop the bleeding. The collected blood samples will be then sent to the laboratory for further testing.
What Does the CPK Test Results Mean?
CPK test measures the level of creatinine phosphokinase enzyme in the blood. The normal level of CPK in the blood means that there is no muscle damage in your body. The normal range of CPK is between 52 u/l and 366 u/l.
The high level of CPK enzyme indicates that there has been some muscle damage or muscle disorders. However, this test does not indicate the area of muscle damage. In the case of strenuous exercise such as sports, weight lifting, etc may increase the CPK level moderately.
