What is a CT scan?

The expanded form of the CT scan is Computed Tomography. CT scan is an imaging technique that produces a complete image of the inner organs of our body. It utilizes X-Ray and a computer to process a complete image of the inner body organs.

The CT scan provides the comprehensive characteristics of the bones, soft tissues, and blood vessels in comparison to the normal X-Ray.

Body parts covered in a CT scan?

CT scans are performed to analyze almost every part of our body. It is usually done to scan the body parts such as

  • Heart
  • Abdomen
  • Shoulders
  • Chest
  • Head
  • Spine
  • Knee

Why is a CT scan performed?

Generally, a CT scan is performed to examine and discover various medical disorders. Impairments in the bones are commonly evaluated by CT scan. It helps in various medical disorders such as

  • Detect and diagnose the tumor, infections, etc.
  • Evaluate the impairments in the inner organs of the body.
  • Examine bone or muscle disorders e.g. bone tumors, fractures, etc.
  • Abnormality in the blood vessels.
  • Execute guided biopsy

How you should prepare for the CT scan?

No specific requirements are necessary for the CT scan. The radiologist will request you to wear a gown given by the lab during the scan. Metal articles inside the CT room are prohibited as it blocks the X-Ray.

A contrast dye may be used by the radiologist to get a proper picture of the organ being scanned. Specific instructions are given by the physician if the contrast material is used.

How is the CT scan procedure done?

CT scan is a quick and non-intrusive procedure. To depict the inner organs of our body X-ray will be used. You will be asked to lie down on the table that is attached to the CT scan machine.

The X-Ray will revolve all over the organ that is being evaluated and taking numerous images in tiny slices. To produce a detailed picture from various angles the table moves front and back.

During the procedure, you will be asked to hold on to your breath for a few seconds to produce a proper image. The CT scan procedure will be observed by a radiologist from a separate room with the assistance of a microphone and speakers.

The CT scan procedure requires at least 20 minutes to complete.

What are the dangers involved in a CT scan?

  • Chances of developing cancer if it is done regularly due to the radiation produced by the CT scan machine.
  • Pregnant women are not suggested for a CT scan as the radiation may affect the fetus.
  • Allergic reactions rarely occur when the contrast dye is used.
  • Rare chances of kidney failure due to the contrast material.
