Frequently Asked Questions About CMV Test
What is the CMV Antibodies Test?
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) antibodies Test is done to detect the CMV infection in the past or in present. It is also done prior to an organ transplant to check whether you had CMV infection in the past.
According to the data, most people will get infected by the CMV before 40 years of age. Normally, the CMV do not show any symptoms. It will remain in your body and becomes active when your immune system is weak.
It will then turn into an acute infection. CMV blood test measures the level of CMV antibodies to determine whether you are infected by the virus. It is checked for the IgG and IgM antibodies which is produced by the immune system if you are infected by Cytomegalovirus (CMV).
Why is Cytomegalovirus Test ordered?
You will be asked to take the CMV test if you show any symptoms of present or past Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection. It is ordered if adults or pregnant women show any of the following flu symptoms
- Fatigue
- Fever
- Headache
- Sore throat
- Weakness
- Pain in muscles
- Swollen lymph nodes
It is ordered for the newborn baby if they show the following abnormalities

It is also done when you undergo an organ transplant. Normally the CMV test is ordered along with other tests such as influenza, mononucleosis (mono) test, Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) test, etc.
Is there any preparation for CMV Test?
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) antibodies test is done on the blood samples. There are no preparations required for the CMV test. You can have your normal diet and carry on regular activities prior to the test. It is also important to consult with your doctor if you are taking any medication.
What is the procedure of the CMV Test?
The procedure of the CMV test is similar to that of any other blood test. A nurse will put a tight band around your arm to make your veins more visible. Then a needle will be injected into your vein to draw the blood samples.
A cotton ball will be pressed on the punctured site to stop the bleeding. The collected blood sample will be then sent to the laboratory for further testing. Sometimes the test can also be done on urine, sputum, cerebrospinal fluid, etc.
What does positive CMV test result mean?
The blood samples will be tested against the CMV IgG antibodies and CMV IgM antibodies. If the test results are positive then it indicates that you may be infected by CMV. Sometimes the IgG and IgM levels may be low even if you are infected by CMV.
Normally the positive CMV IgG and IgM test results mean that you either have been exposed to CMV recently or in the past. If the CMV IgG and IgM antibodies levels is low, it means that the symptoms of CMV are due to some other reason.
