What is a Dexa scan?

Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry is the full form of the DEXA scan. It is also known as the Bone Mineral Density/BMD test and Bone Densitometry test. Dexa scan is a special type of X-ray that measures the strength and density of the bones.

Why is a Dexa scan important?

Dexa scan is a special X-ray done to examine bone density, as the low bone density may increase the risk of breaking your bones more frequently. It is an effective tool to diagnose osteoporosis, a medical condition that increases the risk of fractures.

Causes of low bone density: Calcium and phosphate are the most important minerals that keep our bones healthy. During our life span, the new bones will replace the old bones by absorbing the calcium and phosphate present in them. But sometimes, the rate at which the old bones are absorbed will be higher than the rate at which the new bones are formed. This will lead to low bone density and cause osteoporosis.

Who is recommended for a Dexa scan?

The following people who are at a higher risk of low bone density are generally recommended for a Dexa scan.

Old age: People above 50 years of age are more vulnerable to low bone density as the rate at which the new bones are formed will be low at this age.

Smoking and alcohol consumption: The people who drink too much alcohol and chain smokers are also vulnerable to low bone density.

Medical conditions: People with certain medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, chronic kidney disease, and overactive parathyroid glands are at a higher risk of having low bone mass.

In general, women are at a higher risk of having low bone density compared to men.

How is the Dexa scan performed?

Dexa scan uses two types of devices to examine the bone density depending on the body part to be examined such as the peripheral device and central device. The central device is used to evaluate the bones present in the hip and spine area whereas the peripheral device is used to examine the bones in the wrist, heel, and finger.

If the hip or spine is examined, you will be asked to lie down on a padded table attached to the central Dexa scan machine. In the case of the peripheral device, you will have to just place your leg or forehand in the device to evaluate the bone mass. The scanner passes over the body part several times and the data collected will be sent to a specialized computer to process these into images.

Normally, the entire procedure takes up to 30 minutes to complete.

How to prepare for the Dexa scan?

There is no special preparation required for the Dexa scan. You can have your usual diet and avoid wearing the dress with buttons or zippers as metallic content in them can interfere with x-ray images. You should not take any calcium supplements for 24 hours prior to the scan.

What are the risks associated with the Dexa scan?

There are no potential risks or side effects in the Dexa scan. But it is important to inform your doctor if you are pregnant or expected to be pregnant as the radiation may affect the fetus.

What does the Dexa scan test result mean?

The radiologist will analyze the images stored in the electronic form and prepares the report. The reports will be available within 24 hrs to 48 hrs of the procedure.

The Dexa scan report will show two scores such as T-score and Z-score.

T-score: The T-score says if your bone mass is high or low than the expected level. It compares your results with the normal bone density level.

Z-score: The Z-score compares your score with the normally expected level in your age, sex, weight, or ethnic origin.

Sometimes, a bone scan may also be prescribed to check the rate of bone formation. Know more about the bone scan.
