Why is it necessary to take a Dexa Scan?
Our bones tend to lose mass or minerals as we age. This is a natural process. Generally, someone who is 60 years old will have bone strength lower than someone who is a 30-year-old. However, some certain habits or deficiencies can cause our bones to lose strength faster than they should.
The following are a few risk factors that cause low bone density
- Having low vitamin D or calcium diet
- Consumption of alcohol
- Being inactive
- Intake of high dosage medications

During the Dexa Scan / BMD Test you will be asked to lie down on a table that has a scanner attached to it. The technician will scan the body part with the help of the scanner. The Bone Density Scan usually takes only about 10 to 15 minutes.
What are the risks involved?
Though there is some radiation exposure in the Dexa scan/bone density test, the radiation levels are very low and do not have adverse effects. Inform the concerned doctor if you are pregnant or breast-feeding as the radiation may affect the child.

This score compares your bone mineral density with the healthy young person of your gender. If your results are -1 and above, it indicates your bone density is normal; if -1 to -2.5, then your bone density is low and may lead to Osteoporosis; if it is -2.5 and above, you have osteoporosis.
This score compares your bone mass with other people of your age, gender, and size. If your score is below -2, then you low bone mass compared to the people of your age.
