How is fetal echocardiogram performed?
Fetal echo or fetal echocardiography is an imaging procedure done to diagnose the cardiac conditions of the fetus during the pregnancy phase of the mother. It is generally done in the 2nd Trimester (13 to week 27) of pregnancy.
An ultrasound machine helps to track the sound waves that “echo” the fetus’ heart and creates detailed images of it. This test is mainly done to identify any uncertain abnormality in the functioning of the baby’s heart or blood flow.
It can also be known as Fetal Echo Scan, Ultrasound Fetal Echo Test, or USG Fetal Echo.
Doctors generally do not suggest a Fetal echo test to every expecting mother unless they notice any certain condition or indication of a higher risk of congenital problems. It is often recommended to the mother who has a history of a child with a heart condition, or the mother has a family history of congenital heart disease.
Fetal Echo Test does not require any special preparations. You can have your normal diet and carry on regular activities before the fetal echo scan.
You may be asked to wear a loose gown during the procedure. You should not carry any kind of objects containing metallic contents. Avoid wearing any kind of cosmetic or ointment on your stomach before the scan. It is important to inform your doctor if you are on any kind of medication.
The procedure of Fetal Echocardiography is similar to an ultrasound. It is done by an experienced ultrasound sonographer. An ultrasound machine is an imaging device that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce detailed images of our inner body structures. The 2D images are displayed on the monitor with the help of a transducer (a device that transfers sound waves to the monitor).
Your technician will ask you to lie on an examining table and expose your abdominal area. They will apply a transparent lubricating gel on the skin to prevent friction while moving the transducer on your tummy. The transducer is moved all around the mother’s belly while producing detailed images of the baby’s heart. The machine captures the echoes (sound waves) and reflects them on the attached computer.
Fetal echo is performed on a Color Doppler ultrasound machine that helps to create colored images of the bloodstream of the fetus while giving a clearer view of the functioning of the heart.
You may need to have this test done again if the baby isn’t in the right position to be scanned. If your doctor finds an issue, such as a heart defect, rhythm abnormality, or any other problem then he may suggest you HPLC Hemoglobin Electrophoresis, Anti – B Titres, Quadruple Marker Test, Fetal HB (Hemoglobin), and a few more.
