Frequently Asked Questions About GTT Test
What is GTT Test?
The Glucose Tolerance Test is the full form of the GTT Test. This test is mostly done during pregnancy to detect gestational diabetes in women. GTT test is done to examine how well your body is able to absorb glucose (sugar) and to determine the possibility of developing diabetes.
During pregnancy, the chances of developing gestational diabetes are more even if they do not have any history of diabetes. So the GTT test is considered crucial for women during pregnancy as gestational diabetes may cause severe complications such as premature delivery, large size baby, preeclampsia, etc.
When is the GTT Test Done?
Normally, the glucose tolerance test (GTT) is done during pregnancy as a screening test for gestational diabetes. It is done between the 24th and 28th week of pregnancy. GTT test is also done to
- Monitor the glucose level during pregnancy
- Detect high blood glucose (hyperglycemia)
- Detect low blood glucose (hypoglycemia)
- Screen for diabetes at an early stage
Your doctor will ask you to take the GTT test if you show symptoms of having high or low blood glucose levels.
Symptoms of High Blood Glucose
- Frequent urination
- Blurred vision
- Fatigue
- Wounds do not heal fast
Symptoms of Low Blood Glucose
- Anxiety
- Confusion
- Hunger
- Sweating
GTT test may be done at the early stage of pregnancy if your doctor suspects that you may have type 2 diabetes.
Is there any Preparation Required for GTT Test?
GTT test is done on the blood samples. You should fast for at least eight hours before the test. Avoid drinking any soft drinks or caffeinated drinks as it may affect the test results.
Sometimes the test will be done on the urine sample. So you may be asked not to urinate a few hours before the test. It is also recommended to wear a half-sleeved cloth for the test as it will be convenient to take the blood sample.
What is the procedure of the GTT Test?
GTT test is a simple blood test. The blood samples will be drawn at a one-hour mark for at least three hours. First, the lab assistant will draw the blood sample from the vein which is a baseline marker of your glucose level at that time.
Then you will be asked to drink syrup of 50 g which contains sugar. After one hour, the blood sample will be collected again. This will be repeated again for the third-hour mark. These combined results will help to determine whether you have gestational diabetes or not.
What do the GTT Test Results Mean?
GTT test measures the level of glucose or sugar absorbed by your body during pregnancy. The normal range of blood glucose level during the test should be greater than 92 mg/dl in fasting, more than 180 mg/dl at an hour mark, and more than 153 mg/dl at a two-hour mark of the testing.
If the test results are abnormal then it means that you may have gestational diabetes. However, the blood glucose level may be higher due to various other reasons. Your doctor may ask you to take other diabetes tests to find the exact cause of a high level of glucose.
