Frequently Asked Questions about MRI Scan
About MRI Scan
Magnetic Resonance Imaging is the full form of an MRI scan. It is an advanced non-invasive imaging technique done to detect and diagnose various abnormalities in your body.
An MRI scan uses strong electromagnetic pulses to produce images of the internal organs of the body. It is efficient enough to detect abnormalities in the internal organs including the kidney, liver, brain, spinal cord, joints, chest, lungs, etc.
No preparation is required before the procedure. But, in some situations, a contrast material is used which helps to get a detailed picture of the abnormality. In this case, the doctor may recommend a 12-hour fasting period before the procedure. The contrast dye is either taken orally or is injected into the vein.
You may be required to change into a gown before the MRI Scan takes place. All items containing metallic components are to be removed before entering the MRI scan room.
The MRI machine has a sliding table on which the patient lays down for the imaging process to begin. Once the patient is inside, the magnets in the machine start rotating around the body part that is being examined. This creates a strong electromagnetic field and the signals are picked up and sent to a special computer to process them into detailed images.
A radiologist will be observing the whole test procedure from a nearby chamber with the help of a mic and speakers. Usually, it takes up to 90 minutes to complete the entire procedure depending on the study.
An MRI scan is a safe scan compared to other imaging techniques that use radiation. But, the MRI scan has its own limitations. Patients of heart surgery, for a heart valve implant or implanted any kind of metallic clips or plates, etc. are not allowed to take an MRI scan.
Why an MRI scan is performed?

- Infection
