Frequently Asked Questions about PSA Test
What is a Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) Test?
Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) Test is done to examine the level of PSA in the blood. PSA is a protein produced by the prostate only in the male. The prostate is a gland that is present under your bladder.
Normally the PSA level will be low in the blood. But the high level of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in the blood may indicate that you may have prostate cancer. It is an important tool to detect prostate cancer at an early stage in men above 50 years of age, as they are more vulnerable to increasing levels of PSA.
PSA protein is either bound by few other proteins or in free form. To get the accurate result the PSA total and PSA in free (fPSA) form in measured. The ratio between the two will be used for diagnostics purposes.
What is Prostate Cancer?
Prostate cancer occurs in the prostate gland which is located below the bladder. It looks like a small walnut that is responsible to produce the seminal fluid. It is the most common cancer in men.
Normally the prostate cancer grows slowly and does not cause serious harm. But sometimes it may spread rapidly. If prostate cancer is detected at an early stage, it is more likely to be treated.
When is the PSA test ordered?
PSA test is generally recommended to men who are above 50 years of age as a screening process. But sometimes even men below 50 years of age can also develop prostate cancer.
Your doctor will ask you to take the PSA test if you show any symptoms of prostate cancer such as pain during urination, blood in urine, frequent urination in the night, erectile dysfunction, etc.
Other than this, the PSA test is also done if you have any physical abnormality change in the bladder, to plan for the treatment, or to monitor ongoing treatment.
Is there any preparation for the PSA test?
Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) is a simple blood test. There are no special preparations required for the test. You can have your normal diet and carry on with regular activities.
If you are taking any medications such as vitamins or supplements, consult with your doctor regarding this prior to the test. It is recommended to wear half-sleeved clothes for the procedure for convenience.
What does the PSA test result mean?
Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) test result shows the level of Total PSA and Free PSA in the blood. The total PSA level below 2.5 ng/ml indicates that you do not have prostate cancer.
The total PSA level between 2.5 ng/ml and 10 ng/ml indicates that you may have prostate cancer. If the total PSA level is above 10 ng/ml, it means that you are more likely to have prostate cancer.
In the case of free PSA (fPSA), the normal range is <25% of the total PSA. On the basis of your test result, your doctor will plan for the treatment.
What is the procedure of the PSA test?
The procedure for the PSA test is the same as that of any other blood test. A tight band will be tied around your arm to make the vein swell. This makes it easy to find the vein to insert the needle. Then the area from where the blood is to be drawn will be cleaned with a disinfectant liquid.
A needle will be injected into the vein to draw the blood sample. After removing the needle, a cotton ball will be used to put pressure on the puncture site to stop the bleeding. The collected sample will be then sent to the laboratory for further testing.
