A Treadmill test (TMT) is also known as a Cardiac Stress test. This test helps evaluate the blood circulation in the heart when the body is at rest compared to when the body is put under physical pressure. It helps the doctor monitor how the heart responds to being pushed. A treadmill test involves physical activity such as walking on the treadmill.
It is mainly used to check whether the heart receives enough blood and oxygen supply when it requires it the most. This is done by monitoring the effects of exercise on heart rate.
Why is a Treadmill Test (TMT) performed?
A Treadmill Test (TMT) is performed for multiple reasons –
- Detect coronary artery disease (CAD)
- Evaluate supply of blood and oxygen to the heart
- Monitor functioning of the heart
- Study heart-rate patterns
- Identify cardiac conditions
- Monitor on-going treatments
What is the procedure of a Treadmill Test (TMT)?
During a Treadmill Test, the patient will be asked to start walking on the treadmill to increase the heart rate. As the test will go on, the speed and level of the treadmill will be increased to evaluate the effect of the same on the heart. The doctor will then evaluate the effects of exercise on the heart. If the patient is uncomfortable at any point, the TMT test can be stopped.
When the result has been achieved, the patient will be asked to stop exercising. The doctor will still continue to evaluate the heartbeat and breathing pattern of the patient, for a short period of time.
How to prepare for a Treadmill Test (TMT)?
There are a few things to keep in mind before taking a Treadmill test (TMT). These include –
- Do not drink or eat anything 3-4 hours prior to the test.
- Try to wear loose clothing and carry comfortable shoes for the test, i.e sport shoes.
- Avoid consumption of coffee or nicotine before the test.
- The doctor should be made aware of any existing health conditions, ongoing medications, and all medical history.
