Frequently Asked Questions About ACA Test
What is Anti Cardiolipin Antibodies (ACA) Test?
Anti Cardiolipin Antibodies (ACA) are primarily done to detect and diagnose abnormal blood clots and antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). APS is a type of autoimmune disorder that interferes with the blood clotting process.
In the case of autoimmune disorder, your immune system produces antibodies that attack the healthy cells, tissues, and organs in your body. The APS produces anticardiolipin antibodies that mistakenly attack the body’s own cardiolipin present in the blood.
These antibodies will affect the blood clotting process. It may increase a person’s risk of developing blood clots in veins and arteries which can be life-threatening. ACA blood test is also done to determine the cause of recurrent miscarriage.
Generally, the ACA blood test includes both the anticardiolipin antibodies IgG and anticardiolipin antibodies IgM.
When Cardiolipin Antibodies Test is ordered?
Usually, the Anti Cardiolipin Antibody (ACA) test is ordered when you show symptoms of a blood clot. You may experience the following symptoms if you have any blood clots in veins, lungs, etc
- Tenderness or swelling in the leg
- Rapid breathing
- Blood cough
- Rapid heartbeat
It is also done if you had recurrent miscarriages in the past and if the ANA test results are positive. Sometimes, the ACA test is ordered for screening purposes for a person suspected or diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder such as lupus.
Is there preparation required for ACA Test?
The anticardiolipin antibody test is a simple blood test. You are not required to prepare for the Anti Cardiolipin Antibody (ACA) Test. You can have your normal diet and carry on regular activities. It is important to consult with your doctor if you are taking any medications, as it may affect the test results.
What is the procedure of the ACA Test?
A nurse will put a tight band around your arm to make your veins swell. This makes it easier to draw blood samples. Then a disinfectant liquid will be used to clean the area from where the blood is to be drawn.
To draw the blood sample, a needle will be injected into the vein. After drawing enough blood samples, the punctured site will be pressed with a cotton ball to stop the bleeding.
What is the normal range of ACA?
The positive test result indicates that the anticardiolipin antibodies are present in the blood and thus may be the cause for abnormal blood clots. But sometimes the ACA can be detected in the blood due to a temporary infection or other factors.
If the test results are negative, it indicates that you do not have anticardiolipin antibodies in your blood or is too low to detect at the time of the test. Usually, the precise test results can be obtained only after a series of ACA test at a different point. Your test results show the following range
- Low Positive – <20 GPL*, MPL** & APL*** Units
- Medium Positive – 20 < 80 GPL, MPL & APL Units
- High Positive – 80< GPL, MPL & APL Units
*GPL – G Phospholipids
**MPL – M Phospholipids
***APL – A Phospholipids
