Frequently Asked Questions About Gastrin Test
What is Gastrin Test?
A gastrin test is a simple blood test that is done to determine the level of gastrin in the blood. Gastrin is a type of hormone produced by the G-cells in the stomach. It produces gastric acid which is also known as hydrochloric acid and is responsible to regulate the acidic level in the stomach.
The gastrin is produced by the stomach whenever you intake food. If the acid level increases in the stomach, the body reduces the production of gastrin and vice versa. This acid helps your body to digest and absorb the nutrients such as proteins and amino acids.
Normally, your body produces around 3 liters of gastrin in a day. The gastrin test is done if you show symptoms of having gastrinoma. It is also done if you have conditions such as pain in the abdomen, peptic ulcers, diarrhea, etc.
When is Gastrin Test Done?
Generally, the gastrin test is done to measure the level of gastrin in the blood. Your doctor will ask you to take the gastrin test if you show symptoms of having excess gastrin production called gastrinoma such as
- Abdominal pain
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Nausea
- Loss in weight
- Poor appetite
- Indigestion
- Peptic ulcers
You may be asked to take this test if you have medical conditions such as high calcium levels, family history of gastrinoma, intestinal bleeding, etc, and to monitor the recurrence of the tumor. It is also done if you show symptoms of having a condition called Zollinger-Ellison (ZE) syndrome also known as gastrinoma.
Are there any Preparations Required for the Test?
Gastrin test is a simple blood test. You may be asked not to drink alcohol for a period of 24 hours before the test ad should fast for at least 12 hours prior to the test. You are restricted from taking caffeine and smoking cigarettes a few hours prior to the test.
It is also advised to consult with your doctor if you are taking any medications as they may affect the test results. It is recommended to wear half-sleeved cloth to the test for convenience.
What is the Procedure of the Test?
The procedure of the gastrin test is similar to that of any other blood test. A tight band will be tied around your arm to make the veins swell. The area from where the blood is to be drawn will be cleaned with a disinfectant liquid.
A needle will be injected into the vein to draw the blood which will be collected in a tube. After removing the needle, the puncture site will be pressed with a cotton ball to stop the bleeding. The collected blood sample will be then sent to the laboratory for further testing.
What Do the Gastrin Test Results Mean?
Gastrin test is primarily done to detect and diagnose gastrinoma. The normal range of gastrin in the blood is less than 100 pg/ml.
If the gastrin level is moderately high then it indicates that you may have Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, chronic atrophic gastritis, pernicious anemia, G-cell hyperplasia, chronic kidney failure, etc.
