Frequently Asked Questions About Haptoglobin Test

What is Haptoglobin Test?

Haptoglobin test is done to determine the level of haptoglobin present in the blood. The haptoglobin is a protein produced by the liver to eliminate free hemoglobin present in the blood. It attach with the hemoglobin that is present in the red blood cells.

The red blood cell is responsible to carry the oxygen from the lungs to heart and other parts of the body. It is produced by the bone marrow. Our body destroys and creates the red blood cells to maintain the balance. When the red blood cells are destroyed, it produces hemoglobin which is also known as free hemoglobin.

The haptoglobin binds to this hemoglobin and will be removed by the liver. If the red blood cells are destroyed in a faster rate than it’s production, then the haptoglobin levels may drop as it is eliminated by the liver. The haptoglobin test is primarily done to detect the intravascular hemolysis.

It also helps to evaluate hemolytic anemia and to differentiate it from anemia. The haptoglobin test helps to determine the rate at which the red blood cells are destroyed or breaking apart. Sometimes, the haptoglobin test will be done along with other medical tests such as complete blood count test, lactate dehydrogenase, blood smear, bilirubin, reticulocyte count, etc.

When is Haptoglobin Test Done?

Normally, the haptoglobin test is done if you show symptoms of having hemolytic anemia such as

  • Fatigue
  • Jaundice
  • Pale skin
  • Rapid heart beat
  • Abdominal pain
  • Dizziness
  • Difficulty in breathing

Is there any Preparation Required for Haptoglobin Test?

Haptoglobin test is a simple blood test. There are no special preparations required for the test. You can have your normal diet and carry on your regular activities. However, sometimes you may be asked to fast for few hour before the test.

It is advised to consult with your doctor if you are taking any medications prior to the test. It is also recommended to wear half sleeved cloth to the test for convenience.

What is the Procedure of Haptoglobin Test?

The procedure of haptoglobin test is similar to that of any other blood test. The area from where the blood is to be drawn will be cleaned with an antiseptic. A tight elastic band will be ties around your arm to make the veins swell with blood.

A needle will be injected into the vein the draw the blood which will be collected in a tube. After removing the needle, the punctured site will be pressed with a cotton ball to stop the bleeding. The collected blood sample will be sent to the laboratory for further testing.

What Does the Haptoglobin Test Result Mean?

Haptoglobin test result helps to determine the level of haptoglobin in the blood. The normal range of haptobloin in the blood is between 30 mg/dl and 200 mg/dl. Generally, the haptoglobin test results are interpreted in conjunction with other test results such as reticulocyte count, hemoglobin, hematocrit and CBC test.

If the haptoglobin level is low with increased level of reticulocyte count, then it indicates that you may have hemolytic anemaia.

If the heptoglobin level is normal and the reticulocyte count is increased, then the red blood cells are destroyed in the liver or spleen itself not releasing free hemoglobin into the blood stream. However, it is advised to consult with your doctor for better understanding of the test results.
