Brief about PET CT scan
A fusion of positron emission tomography and computed tomography is called a PET CT scan or PET scan. It is a powerful nuclear imaging technique to diagnose cancer. PET CT scan assists in examining the diseases in the body and also detect organs and tissues functioning.
A minimum amount of radioactive material is injected into a vein. The blood flow, oxygen use, and metabolism in your body at the cellular level are examined by the PET Scan machine with the help of the material.
Since the radioactive substance is low it is considered to be not harmful.
CT scans produce a complete image of the tissues and organs, whereas a PET scan provides the activities of the tissues and organs. Due to the fusion of both CT scans and PET CT scans better results are obtained.
What is the procedure for a PET scan?- A small amount of radioactive substance is injected into the vein at the beginning stage of the PET scan procedure.
- The body will take around 60 minutes for the radioactive substance to be absorbed and there is no difference felt by the patient.
- The patient will be taken to the PET CT scan room and will be asked to lie on a table provided after an hour.
- The table slides into the PET scan machine.
- It takes about an hour to complete the entire procedure.
The patient will be asked to fast for 8 to 12 hours before the procedure. The patient is allowed to drink water but not coffee or tea.
Why is a PET CT scan prescribed?
PET CT scan is majorly prescribed to diagnose and monitor cancer. As cancer is rapidly increasing in India, the use of PET CT scan is also increasing.
Major reasons for using PET Scan:- Diagnose cancer
- Resolve about cancer therapy
- Examine how well is the body functioning to the cancer treatment
- Brain disorders
- Heart disorders
- Central nervous system disorders
Radiation from the X-rays and the radioactive drug is exposed by the patient during a PET CT scan. As the less radioactive substance is used there is no risk.
Usually, a PET CT scan is not harmful to the body. Pregnant women are not suggested to take a PET CT Scan as the impact of its radiation on the fetus is not known.
