Frequently Asked Questions About AFP Test
What is the Alpha-Fetoprotein Test or AFP Test?
Alpha-Fetoprotein Test, or AFP Test, is a blood test done to detect and diagnose the signs of liver cancer and testicular cancer. It is also called AFP Level Test, Total AFP Test, or AFP-L3% Test. It is often ordered for people who have chronic liver diseases.
It also helps in monitoring the recurrence of cancer, detect the residual tumor, and the effectiveness of the provided treatment in adults. If the AFP level is inflated, your doctor may suggest other additional tests to confirm cancer.
Please remember that AFP Test is not to be used as a cancer screening test in the general population.
This blood test is also done to check the AFP level of a fetus by testing the mother’s blood. AFP is a protein present in blood that is produced by the developing fetus in the liver, yolk sac, and gastrointestinal tract. For maternal testing, AFP levels help to ascertain the probability of certain chromosomal diseases in the child including:
- Open neural tube defects
- Low birth weight
- Premature delivery
- Fetal kidney abnormalities
- Placental malformations
AFP test is generally done in 14 -22 weeks of pregnancy. Infants normally have high levels of AFP which decreases as they grow by 10 months of age.
What is the normal range for the Alpha-Fetoprotein Cancer Marker Test?
The level of AFP starts to decrease as the baby is born and continues to fall as the age grows. The normal range for the Alpha-Fetoprotein test is less than 10 ng/ml (nanogram per milliliter) in normal adults. If the levels are increased up to 500 ng/ml then it signifies the sign of Hepatocellular cancer (a form of liver cancer), ovarian or testicular cancer in adults (excluding pregnant women).
The results of patients who have the chronic liver disease may show an increased level-up to 100 ng/ml. This may result in a fake positive result, which often causes anxiety in patients. If your report shows high levels before your treatment then your doctor may ask you for further diagnostic tests.
Please remember that is it not advised that you interpret the AFP results on your own. Your doctor is in the best position to understand the results in the context of your background, condition, and the other tests ordered with the AFP test.
What is the interpretation of the results of the AFP Test?
In around 70% of cases of hepatocellular carcinoma, the levels are higher than normal. The levels are also high in cases of ovarian tumors and germ cell tumors. In some forms of cancer, AFP level may be elevated in some individuals
The elevated levels are also observed in many individuals in the general population. There are high incidences of false negative or false positive. Hence, AFP Tests should never be used as a screening test for any form of cancer.
What are the tests generally prescribed with AFP Test?
For classification of germ cell cancers, Beta HCG and LDH Tests are done with AFP Tests.
For prenatal screening, Triple Marker and Quadruple Marker Tests are done which have AFP as one of the parameters covered in them.
