Frequently Asked Questions About AMA Test
What is an AMA Blood Test?
Anti-mitochondrial Antibody (AMA) test is the full form of AMA blood test. AMA test is done to detect the Anti-mitochondrial Antibodies present in your body.
It is done to detect a medical condition called Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC) where the immune system attacks the mitochondria portion of the cell.
Mitochondria is responsible to produce enough energy for the cells to function in your body. AMA which is produced by the immune system primarily attacks the walls of the bile ducts of the liver.
What is AMA Disease?
Anti-mitochondrial Antibody is a type of autoimmune disorder. In this case your immune system attacks and destroys its own cells, tissues, and organs considering it as a threat to your body.
In the case of AMA, the immune system attacks the mitochondria which are the source of energy for the cells to function. In this case, the anti-mitochondrial antibody attacks the walls of the bile ducts of the liver which may lead to liver damage.
The disorder caused by the anti-mitochondrial antibody is known as primary biliary cholangitis (PCB).
When is the AMA Test Ordered?
Generally, your doctor will ask you to take the anti-mitochondrial antibody test if you show symptoms of primary biliary cholangitis (PCB) or your liver function test results are abnormal.
It is ordered if you show the following symptoms
- Fatigue
- Jaundice
- Itching
- Pain in the upper abdomen
- Liver enlargement
- Loss in weight
- Dry mouth
You will be asked to take this test when you are tested for liver disease or damage such as hepatitis.
Do I need to Prepare for the test?
AMA test is done on the blood samples. There is are no preparations required for the test. You can have a normal diet prior to the test. However, it is recommended to wear half-sleeved clothes during the test for your convenience.
What is the Procedure for the test?
AMA test procedure is the same as any other blood test. A nurse will tie a tight band around your arm. This makes your vein swell and more visible. Then a cotton pad soaked in a disinfectant liquid will be used to clean the skin.
A needle will be injected into your vein to draw the blood sample. After drawing enough blood samples, the needle will be removed and the puncture site will be pressed with a cotton ball to stop the bleeding.
The collected blood sample will be sent to the laboratories for testing the level of anti-mitochondrial antibody.
What does a positive AMA test mean?
The test results show the level of anti-mitochondrial antibodies present in your blood. If the test result is positive then it indicates that you may have primary biliary cholangitis (PCB).
When the level of AMA or AMA M2 is higher than the normal reference range, then it is confirmed to have PCB.
If the result shows negative AMA or AMA M2, it means that the symptoms of PCB are due to some other reasons. But it cannot be completely ruled out on the basis of the AMA test alone.
You may also be asked to take other tests along with AMA tests such as Antinuclear Antibodies (ANA) Test, IgM test, Albumin Test, Bilirubin Test, Prothrombin Time (PT), C-reactive Protein (CRP), GCT, etc to detect PBC. You can view the sample report of the AMA test below.
