Frequently Asked Questions About CBCT Scan

What is a CBCT Dental?

The full form for CBCT is Cone Beam Computed Tomography Dental Scan. It is a special type of X-Ray procedure that produces 3-dimensional images of teeth and jaw. It can show inner soft tissues, nerve pathways, bones, and ligaments.

Dental Cone Beam CT Scan is the latest technology in the field of dentistry that is getting more widely available. It is the variation of the traditional CT Scans. It is basically used where 2D images are not sufficient or where access to technological processes such as guided surgery will improve patient management.

It can also be called C-arm CT, cone beam volume CT, or flat panel CT.

Who is recommended for a Dental Cone Beam CT Scan?

3D Cone-beam dental scan is generally recommended to assess complex dental cases such as:

  • for a surgical dental implant or reconstructive planning,
  • visualization of abnormal or disoriented tooth structure,
  • to evaluate jaws and face including nerve canal and nasal cavity,
  • cleft palate assessment (a birth defect),
  • to check severe dental cavities,
  • to track the root canal procedure,
  • to diagnose TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint Disorder) – pain due to abnormal movement of the jaw joint and muscles,
  • to plan treatment for other orthodontic issues

What are the required preparations for CBCT Dental Scan?

CBCT doesn’t require any specific preparation. But your healthcare provider will expect you to:

  • wear loose and comfortable clothes during the scan, without any embellishments or any decorative obstruction
  • remove metallic objects or ornaments
  • change the schedule of your medicines, if you are a diabetic (consult with the doctor)
  • inform if you have any removable or placed dentures
  • if you had another CT Scan with contrast within the duration of the past 24 hours.

What is the procedure for CBCT Dental Scan?

CBCT is a scanning system, which has been specifically designed to produce three-dimensional images of the maxillofacial (area covering jaws and face) structure. The machine acquires the data with the help of a conical X-Ray beam source and detectors.

3 D Cone-beam CT scanner is basically a square-shaped machine that has an attached X-ray source and a detector. During the examination, you will be asked to sit comfortably on the chair or lie on a sliding table. Your radiologist will position you in such a manner that your face comes opposite to the sourcing beams.

Then a pyramidical cone-shaped gantry will rotate in a 360° degree around the head while capturing the images of the area. The machine produces multiple informative images from different angles in just a few seconds.

The actual visuals are produced in 2-dimensional slices then it is compiled into 3 Dimensional images to provide a better view of the jaw and other moth structures.

Typically the scan can take between 20 to 40 seconds for a complete volume, also called a full mouth x-ray, in which the entire mouth and dental structures are imaged. It will take less than 10 seconds if you are scanned for a specific area of the maxilla (upper teeth arc) or mandible (lower teeth arc).

How CBCT is better than a traditional CT Scan?

  • CBCT produces more efficient and informative images than a normal CT Scan.
  • CBCT is well suited in dentistry for hard tissue imaging.
  • The amount of radiation dose used during CBCT is lesser as compared to the normal CT Scan.
  • Through CBCT the method of data collecting is more convenient than a CT Scanner.
  • A Cone Beam CT Scanner gives more detailed visuals as compared to the traditional CT Scanner.

What are the possible interpretations of CBCT?

You will get the reports on the very next day of the test. The radiologist will not explain your condition mentioned in the results. Your concerned doctor will be in the right position to interpret your results.

CBCT scans are performed to assess the progression of the disease and to plan treatment or surgery. Your doctor will look for the irregularities or findings in your reports. They may inform you about any change in the shape, size or density of your jaw structures. The dentist will check your bone pattern or the appearance of certain parts.

However, CBCT shows minimal differences in the density of soft tissues unless the disease has caused some extreme harm.
