Frequently Asked Questions About CT Coronary Angiogram
What is a CT Coronary Angiography?
CT Angiography is a diagnostic testing procedure to check for the blocked blood vessels in our heart. It uses advanced X-Ray beams to produce accurate reports of the coronary arteries.
It is a boon for patients who are suffering from heart diseases as CT Angiography is economical, non-invasive, and a quick procedure.
CT Coronary Angiography can also be called CT Cardiac Angiography or CT Angiography Heart.
Who should take the scan?
CT Coronary / Heart Angiography has brought a drastic change in the way of diagnosis and treatment of heart diseases. Generally, doctors recommend CT Coronary Angiography to the individual who has:
- a family history of heart disease or smokers
- high blood pressure,
- high cholesterol,
- diabetes,
- an aneurysm (swollen artery),
- unexplained chest pain,
- obesity,
- an inactive lifestyle
CT Coronary Angiography is also suggested as a preventive health check or a follow-up after heart surgery. People above 35 are prone to heart attacks. They must consult their doctor and check for their outward symptoms if any.
Preparation for the Scan?
- Wear a pair of loose and comfortable clothes (without embellishments and metals).
- Inform your doctor about any medical history or recent scans.
- Carry your urine creatinine report along with you.
- Notify your concerned doctor if you are pregnant or a breastfeeding mother.
- Preferably shave your chest if it is too hairy.
- Notify your doctor if you have diabetes or thyroid disorders.
- Your doctor may ask you to fast for a few hours prior your scan.
The procedure of CT Angiogram?
The procedure of CT Coronary Angiography is almost non-invasive as it doesn’t involve any incision or leaves any side effects on the patient’s body. The whole procedure requires around 60 minutes (injection of contrast dye, its absorption in the body, and actual CT Scan) to complete and produce quality reports. Reports are generally handed over after an analysis by an expert radiologist that may take a day.
Prior to the scan, your technician will inject a small amount of contrast agent in your body. This small contrast agent is actually a radioactive nuclear dye that highlights the bloodstream and gets brighter under the X-Ray beams. The agent may take up to 1 hour to be absorbed in your body.
After waiting for 30 min or more, you will be asked to lie on an examining table attached to the CT Scan machine. A CT Scan machine is a cylindrically shaped tunnel in which several X-Ray detectors and cameras are attached that rotates around the patient’s body. While rotating, the attached cameras click multiple pictures collecting important information about the patient’s affected area. These collected visuals are called slices. These slices are reflected on a computer monitored by your radiologist.
