The Dexa Scan / Bone Density Test is the only test to diagnose osteoporosis. It is a medical condition that increases the chance of fracture. If the bone density is less than the normal density the chances of breaking your bone are high. The Dexa Scan helps to keep a check on the density of our bones.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dexa Scan
What is a Dexa Scan?
The Dexa Scan / Bone Density Test is the only test to diagnose osteoporosis. It is a medical condition that increases the chance of fracture.
If the bone density is less than the normal density the chances of breaking your bone is high. The Dexa Scan helps to keep a check on the density of our bones.
What are the causes of low bone density?
Our body needs minerals such as calcium and phosphate to keep the bones healthy. The old bones will be reabsorbed and create new bones overtime.
Sometimes your body may reabsorb calcium and phosphate from bones, instead of storing them. This reduces bone mass in our bodies.
Who is more vulnerable to low bone density?
During our lifetime, our body reabsorbs old bone and create new bone. The density of bone reduces when the old bones are reabsorbed more rather than creating new bones. People with the possibility of having low bone density are
Old age people: People above 50 years of age have a low bone density as their body stops creating new bones and reabsorbs old bone more. This will reduce the bone mass in the body.
Drinking: Too much alcohol may damage and increase the chance of breaking your bones.
Smoking: People who are smoking normally have weaker bones compared to those who don’t smoke.
Medical conditions: People with Rheumatoid arthritis, chronic kidney disease, and overactive parathyroid gland have the probability of low bone density.
Normally men are at lower risk of low bone density compared to women.
How does a Dexa Scan equipment look like?
In the case of the Dexa Scan / Bone Density Test, there is no need to go through a tunnel-like structure as in other types of scans. There are two types of devices used in the Dexa Scan. They are Peripheral devices and Central devices.
The central device is used to examine the bone mass in the hip and spine in our body. It is usually done in labs.
In the case of a peripheral Dexa scan, the bone density of the wrist, heel, and finger are examined. It weighs less than the central Dexa device. The peripheral Dexa scan is a portable device with limited space to place your foot or forearm.
What is the procedure of Dexa Scan?
The Dexa scan is done either on a central or peripheral device. It depends on the body part which is to be examined. You can wear your normal clothes during the procedure.
In the case of Central Dexa Scan, you will be asked to lie down on a padded table to measure the bone density of the hip and spine. The table is attached to a scanner that passes over the area which is to be examined. It will scan and generate images on the computer. You should stay still during the procedure. You may be asked to hold your breath for a few seconds to get a clear image of your bones.
The Peripheral Dexa Scan is almost similar in which you should place your leg or forehand in a small device to measure the bone density.
The scanner uses X Ray beams to measure the bone density in our body. A small amount of radiation is used to get a detailed image of your bone mass.
The procedure may take 10 to 30 minutes depending on the device used and the body part to be examined.
How often should the bone density test be done?
It is recommended to take the bone density test every two years to examine the increase or decrease in bone mass. The patients who are on high dose steroid medications may need a follow up every six months.
Is there any risk in Dexa Scan?
Normally there are no complications in Dexa Scan. If you are pregnant, inform your doctor about it before taking the test. There may be a slight chance of risk from exposure to radiation.
How to prevent low bone density?
The bone mass may reduce due to various factors. But can partially prevent or slow the bone loss in our body by following the steps given below
- Eat a diet with high calcium
- Consume diet having Vitamin D content
- Quit Smoking
- Exercise regularly
- Limit consumption of alcohol
By following this you cannot completely prevent low bone density. But still, you can slow the bone loss in your body.
What can be expected from the result?
You will receive your bone density result in two numbers. T-score and Z-score.
T-score: The T-score is your bone density compared to the normal bone density. It will say whether your bone density is normal, below, or above the expected level.
Z-score: It is the score of what is normally expected from someone of your age, sex, weight, or ethnic origin.
