What is the Myoglobin Serum Test?
Myoglobin test is done to detect and determine the level of myoglobin present in the blood. It is a oxygen-binding protein prersent in the heart and skeletal muscles. Myoglobin traps the oxygen required for the functioning of muscles.
Normally, myoglobin is not found in the bloodstream. It is released in the bloodstream only if there is any injury in heart of skeletal muscle. The myoglobin level increases within few hours of the muscle injury. This test is primarily done when there is severe muscle injury or heart attack is suspected.
The presence of myoglobin in the blood is used as a cardiac marker for heart attack. Sometimes, the myoglobin test is done along with troponin test that helps to detect recent heart attack.
The myoglobin level starts to rise within 2 to 3 hours of muscle injury or heart attack and reaches its peak level within 8 to 12 hours. The level of myoglobin will usually become normal within a day. Sometimes myoglobin urine test is also done to detect the muscle damage.

The myoglobin test is not widely used to diagnose heart attack, as it do not stay in the blood as long as troponin.

What is the Procedure of Myoglobin Test?
The procedure of myoglobin test is similar to that of any other blood test. A nurse will tie an elastic band around your arm to make the veins swell with the blood. The area from where the blood is to be drawn will be cleaned with an antiseptic.
A needle will be injected into the vein to draw the blood which will be collected in a tube. After removing the needle, a cotton ball will be used to put pressure on the puncture site to stop the bleeding. The collected blood sample will be sent to the laboratory for further testing.
What Does the Myoglobin Test Results Mean?
Myoglobin test helps to detect the muscle damage or possible heart attack. The normal range of myoglobin is less than 90 mcg/ml. The high levels of myoglobin in the blood may indicate the following
- Excessive stress in the muscle

- Malignant hyperthermia
- Shock
- Inflammation of skeletal muscles
