What is an ultrasound scan?
Ultrasound which is also called USG or Sonography is an imaging technique to visualize the inner parts of the body. It is done to examine the pain, swelling, or infections in the internal part of our body.
Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to produce detailed pictures of the internal organs of our body. It can be done on any part of the body. The results of the ultrasound test can be used in further diagnosis.
Why is an ultrasound scan done?
The ultrasound is an effective tool to detect the causes of pain, swelling, or infections in the internal organs of our body. It is an effective way to examine the following parts of our body
- Kidney
- Liver
- Bladder
- Eyes
- Thyroid
- Blood vessels
- Heart
- Uterus
- Hips in infants
- Spine in infants
Ultrasound is most commonly used to examine the health of the fetus at different periods of pregnancy as it does not use any kind of radiation.
How to prepare for an ultrasound scan?
Generally, the preparations for the ultrasound test depend on the type and body part that is to be examined. Your doctor will provide you the special instructions if it is required prior to your test.
In the case of an ultrasound abdomen, you may be asked to fast for at least 8 to 12 hours prior to your test. There are chances that the undigested food may block the sound waves producing unclear images.
If the gallbladder, liver, spleen, etc are examined, you may be asked to eat a diet that is fat-free the evening before the test and is required to fast till the time of the scan. Also, you should drink enough water and hold the urine for your bladder examination as the procedure requires a full bladder.
What is the procedure of an ultrasound scan?
Ultrasound is a non-invasive method that uses high-frequency sound waves to visualize the inner parts of the body. The scan is done with the help of a device called a transducer. The transducer sends the high-frequency sound waves into the body and picks the echos produced due to the sound waves.
You may be asked to change into a gown which will be provided by the lab. You should lie down on the examination table with your body part that is to be examined fully exposed.
A technician will apply a lubricating gel on that body part to avoid any frictions when it is rubbed against the skin.
The transducers send the sound waves into the body and collect the echos that bounce back after hitting the internal organs. These data will be then sent to a computer to generate a detailed image.
Generally, it takes around 30 minutes to complete the entire process of the ultrasound test.
What are the risks involved in an ultrasound scan?
Normally the Ultrasound does not involve any potential risks. Unlike other imaging techniques, ultrasound does not use any kind of radiation. So it is completely safe as you will not be exposed to any kind of radiation.
