Frequently asked questions about endoscopy test

The following are the frequently asked questions endoscopy test?

  • Why is an endoscopy test done?
  • How should I prepare for the endoscopy test?
  • How is the endoscopy test performed?
  • What are the risks involved in the endoscopy test?

What is an endoscopy test?

An endoscopy test is primarily done to examine and detect any abnormalities in the upper gastrointestinal area. Mainly, our upper gastrointestinal region includes the first part of our digestive system including the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum (the first part of the small intestine). The test can also be called Esophagogastroduodenoscopy or EGD.

The endoscopy test is a non-invasive procedure to examine the upper gastrointestinal region. It is an effective tool to detect ulcers, tumors, inflammation, infection or abnormal bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract.

Why is an endoscopy done?

Your doctor may ask you to take the upper endoscopy if you experience any of the following symptoms.

  • Heartburn (irritation of the esophagus)
  • Pain in the upper abdomen
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding (bleeding in the internal tract such as the Peptic ulcer).
  • Issues in swallowing
  • Upset digestive system
  • Unexplained chest pain or breathing problems
  • High temperature
  • Dark-colored stool
  • Choked food pipe

Endoscopy GI also helps in determining internal inflammation, tumors, or cancerous tissues. It is a helpful tool for the removal of polyps (abnormal growth) or collecting samples for biopsies.

How should I prepare for the endoscopy test?

The endoscopy test requires a few preparations prior to the test. Your doctor will explain the preparations required for the test. The following are the few common preparations required for the test

  • Make sure you have an empty stomach before the Endoscopy procedure. Preferably, fast for a few hours before your test.
  • Remove your Dentures during your test.
  • Discuss with your doctor about the medical problems you are facing, if any.
  • Notify your doctor about the medicines or drugs you are taking regularly.
  • Adjust your dose of insulin, if you are a diabetic.
  • Your technician may spray a sedative (anesthesia) in your mouth or inject one during your test. Inform them if you are allergic to any kind of sedative.
  • You will not be allowed to talk during the session, so make sure you get very clear about every query in your mind.
  • Take enough rest on the following day of your Endoscopy test.

How is the endoscopy test performed?

The procedure is done using a long flexible medical tube called endoscopy. The endoscopy has an attached camera, light, and a separate hole that transmits air pressure.

During the procedure, you will be asked to lie on your side on an examining table. You will be asked to open your mouth widely to insert an endoscope. A plastic mouthpiece may be used to keep your mouth wide open throughout the procedure.

The endoscopy will be then inserted through your mouth, passing through the esophagus (the “food pipe” leading from your mouth into your stomach), and move into extended parts of the stomach.

The whole procedure is monitored with the help of a computer attached to the endoscopy. An endoscope can pump air into the stomach and duodenum, which makes it easier to see.

If they find any polyp (extra growth on the lining) then it will be removed during the process. If signs of cancer are detected then they will collect a sample of tissue from the affected area for further examinations. The sample is forwarded to labs for a biopsy report.

The time taken for your test procedure will be around 15-30 mins approximately.

What are the risks involved in the endoscopy test?

There are very minimal chances of any risk during an endoscopy test. However, if it is not performed carefully by an experienced technician then it may result in something worse for a patient. Generally, the risks include:

  • Perforation of the lining of the internal organs.
  • Excess bleeding from the site where tissue or polyp has been removed for a biopsy.
  • Any uncertain reaction from the sedative given during the test.
  • Infection by using an unsterilized endoscope.
  • Spread of cancer to the organs while collecting the cancer tissue from the affected site.

You may experience a sore throat, stomach cramps, bloatedness, sluggish or nausea after the test. This will diminish in a day or two.

If you find something abnormal or your after-effects don’t reduce soon, then immediately consult with your healthcare provider.
