What is the Procedure of Anti Ds DNA Antibody Test?
The procedure of anti ds DNA antibody test is similar to that of any other blood test. A tight elastic band will be tied around your arm to make the veins more visible. The area from where the blood is to be drawn will be cleaned with a disinfectant liquid.
A needle will be then injected into the vein to draw the blood which will be collected in a tube. Normally the result of anti ds DNA antibody test is considered along with other auto-antibody tests. The normal range of auto-antibody present in the blood is between 30 IU/ml and 75 IU/ml. The high level of anti ds DNA antibody in the blood indicates that you may have lupus. The positive result of anti-Sm test and increased level of anti ds DNA antibody means that you definitely have lupus.
The low level of anti ds DNA antibody means that you may not have lupus. But this cannot be completely ruled out as about 50 percent of patients with lupus have very low level of anti ds DNA antibody in the blood.
The moderate level of anti Ds DNA antibody can be seen in Sjogren syndrome and mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD).
However, if the ANA test result is negative there is no need for any other auto-antibody test as it indicates that the entire group is negative.
