Frequently Asked Questions About Anti LKM Test
What is Anti LKM 1 Antibody?
The full form of LKM Antibody is Liver Kidney Microsome type 1 Antibody. The LKM antibody is produced by the body’s immune system. These proteins attack and damage their own enzyme called cytochrome P450 2D6. The cytochrome P450 2D6 enzyme is primarily found in the liver cells.
This condition is an autoimmune disorder where the protein produced by the immune system mistakenly attacks the healthy cells in our body. The presence of Anti LKM 1 Antibody is often associated with the type 2 autoimmune hepatitis.
Why is the Anti LKM Test done?
The Anti LKM 1 Antibody Test is usually done along with the ASMA test and ANA test. This is an effective tool to diagnose and differentiate between two major autoimmune hepatitis types (type 1 & type 2). The test measures the amount of Anti LKM 1 Antibody present in the blood It is also done as a follow-up test if any abnormality is found in other liver tests. Additional tests may also be done to rule out viral hepatitis.
When is it done?
The Anti LKM 1 Antibody Test is normally done to differentiate the causes of liver damage. Your doctor may ask you to take the test if there is any abnormality in regular liver tests. It is also done if you show the signs and symptoms of autoimmune hepatitis such as
- Enlargement in liver
- Itching
- Discomfort in Abdomen
- Pain in joints
- Dark urination
- Appetite loss
- Vomiting
- Rashes in skin
- Nausea
- Abnormality or absence of menstrual period
How to prepare for the test?
The Anti LKM 1 Antibody Test is just a simple blood test. There are no special preparations required for the test. You can have your normal diet and carry on your regular activities prior to the test. To be convenient it is advised to wear half sleeved clothes during the procedure.
How is the test done?
The procedure for Anti LKM Antibody Test is almost similar or same as any other blood test. The blood sample will be drawn from the veins present in your arm. A nurse will put a tight elastic band around your arm which will make the veins swell. This makes it easy to find the vein to inject the needle.
A disinfectant liquid is used to sanitize the area from where the blood will be drawn. Then the needle will be injected in the vein to draw the blood sample. The needle will be removed after drawing enough blood samples required for the test.
You will be asked to put some pressure on the needle site to stop bleeding. Then a band aid will be put on the punctured area.
What are the risks involved in the test?
Just like any other blood test the Anti LKM 1 Antibody test does not have any potential side effects. You may feel slight discomfort when the needle is injected which will eventually fade away.
But it is necessary to inform your doctor if you have any known bleeding disorders, as it may lead to excess bleeding on the needle site.
How to interpret the test result?
The presence of high-level Anti LKM antibodies in our body indicates that the person is likely to have type 2 autoimmune hepatitis. But it is alone not enough to carry on the diagnosis. Your doctor may ask you to take a liver biopsy to examine the damage and scarring in the liver to carry on proper diagnosis.
The person is likely to have type 1 autoimmune hepatitis if the Anti LKM test is negative, but the ASMA test and/or ANA test are positive.
If both the test results are negative, this indicates that the symptoms may be due to cause other than autoimmune hepatitis.
The people with type 2 autoimmune hepatitis may also develop other autoimmune disorders such as thyroiditis or diabetes.
What are the limitations of Anti LKM Test?
The presence of autoimmune hepatitis cannot be completely ruled out on the basis of the Anti LKM 1 Antibody Test. In some cases, people with autoimmune hepatitis may produce a different type of Anti LKM antibody, commonly referred to as anti LKM3. This antibody cannot be detected with the help of the Anti LKM 1 antibody test.
Sometimes our body produces anti LKM 1 antibody due to the HCV infections and not because of the presence of type 2 autoimmune hepatitis. So the presence of type 2 autoimmune hepatitis cannot be completely ruled out on the basis of Anti LKM 1 Antibody Test.
