The arterial blood gas test is done to analyze the level of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood. It is also done to determine the pH or acidity of the blood. This test helps to examine the function of the lungs on how it moves oxygen into the blood and removes carbon dioxide from the blood. This is also called arterial blood gas analysis.

How to prepare for the test?
The arterial blood gas analysis is a simple blood test. Any special preparation is not required for the test. But if you are on oxygen therapy, your doctor may turn off the oxygen for 20 to 30 minutes.
What is the procedure of the test?
The procedure for arterial blood gas tests is almost similar to the simple blood test. But in this case, the sample is drawn from the arteries instead of veins. The nurse will apply some pressure to the arteries in the wrist for a few seconds to ensure normal blood flow in the hand.
The area where the blood is drawn will be sterilized with a disinfectant liquid. A needle will be inserted into the artery to draw the blood sample. After removing the needle, a cotton ball will be used to put pressure on that area.
Is there any risk in the test?
The arterial blood gas test is a low-risk procedure. It does not have any possible side effects. But you may feel faint, lightheaded, and dizzy due to the procedure. It is important to inform your doctor if you have any medical conditions such as bleeding disorders before taking the test.
How to interpret the test result?
The arterial blood gas test shows whether the lungs are getting enough oxygen and removing enough carbon dioxide. It also shows how well the kidney is functioning. The test measures the
Arterial Blood pH – This measures the number of hydrogen ions in the blood.
Bicarbonate – This chemical prevents blood from becoming too acidic or too basic.
The presence of oxygen dissolved in the blood determine how well the oxygen flows from the lungs to the blood.
Oxygen saturation – measures the amount of oxygen carried by the hemoglobin in red blood cells.
